Game Science bets Chinese mythology can make a global 3A hit; Wukong sells 20M in a month

Ex-Tencent devs founded Game Science in 2014 to build premium single-player games; Wukong's 2024 launch sold 10M copies in 3 days, 20M in a month

Game Science (游戏科学)

The betThat a small Chinese studio could win with a full-priced single-player game rooted in Chinese mythology — betting AAA quality beats the domestic free-to-play norm.Scaling

What the business is

Hangzhou-based studio making premium PC/console action-RPGs from Chinese mythology; its debut title Black Myth: Wukong launched in August 2024.

How it started

In 2014 Feng Ji and Yang Qi left Tencent (腾讯) after their MMO Asura (《斗战神》) was reshaped by free-to-play monetization, and founded Game Science in Hangzhou. In February 2018 the team decided to 'pioneer' a high-quality single-player game; at a dinner where teammates argued for sci-fi shooters and samurai action, everyone fell silent when Journey to the West came up, and that shared cultural memory became the project.

What happened

Development ran 6.5 years on a team of roughly 100 people. A 13-minute gameplay video posted 2020-08-20 went viral (expecting ~500k views, it drew tens of millions) and turned the project into a national talking point. The game launched 2024-08-20 on PC (Steam, WeGame) and PS5, and pre-orders had opened in June 2024.

How it ended up

Record-breaking success: 10M copies sold by 2024-08-23, 18M by the end of the second week and 20M in the first month (Guinness-certified), making it China's first global 3A hit; by mid-2026 reported sales surpassed 30M and the studio announced its next title, Black Myth: Zhong Kui.

Background

Game Science was founded in 2014 in Hangzhou by Feng Ji and Yang Qi after their Tencent MMO Asura (《斗战神》) was reshaped by free-to-play monetization. In February 2018 the founders decided to 'pioneer' a premium single-player title; at a dinner where teammates argued for sci-fi shooters and action adventures, everyone went silent when Journey to the West came up — the shared cultural memory became the game's foundation.

The studio spent 6.5 years developing on a team of roughly 100 people. On 2020-08-20 it posted a 13-minute gameplay demo, mainly to recruit staff — Feng Ji expected about 500,000 views; the video drew tens of millions, made the project a national phenomenon, and became its marketing launchpad.

Black Myth: Wukong (黑神话:悟空) launched 2024-08-20 on PC (Steam, WeGame) and PS5. Game Science announced 10M copies sold across platforms by 2024-08-23, with 3M peak concurrent players and 2.29M on Steam (then the second-highest peak in Steam history); Guinness World Records certified 20M copies sold in the first month.

Chinese media (Pengpai (澎湃), Jiemian (界面)) framed it as the start of China's 3A era — a full-priced, buy-to-play single-player game out-exporting the domestic mobile norm, with Goldman Sachs calling it a turning point for Chinese games going global. By mid-2026 reported cumulative sales exceeded 30M copies and the studio had announced its next title, Black Myth: Zhong Kui (黑神话:钟馗).

What has to be true

  • Free-to-play monetization had reshaped their own Tencent MMO Asura, leaving the team an itch to make a game not designed around payments.
  • Journey to the West is shared cultural memory across the Chinese-speaking world, so the IP needed no introduction at home.
  • The studio targeted Steam/PS5 full-price buyers instead of mobile live-ops, where quality rather than retention mechanics wins.
  • No Chinese studio had yet proven the AAA market, so premium talent and mindshare were still up for grabs.
  • A viral demo plus cultural pride produced launch-day demand no marketing budget could have bought.

What can be applied

When incumbent logic is wrong for a category, the contrarian can own it: China's free-to-play giants ignored premium single-player, and a small studio betting on cultural authenticity won globally.

Aftermath

As of mid-June 2026, reported cumulative sales had surpassed 30M copies — a figure the studio itself did not confirm beyond its earlier 10M-in-four-days milestone. Game Science is developing Black Myth: Zhong Kui, a single-player action-RPG from Chinese folklore announced at Gamescom 2025, and the 2024 launch is widely credited with starting a wave of big-budget Chinese PC/console games.
