Hyperloop One: $450M vacuum-tube transport bet shuts down in 2023

Hyperloop One raised about $450M to build Musk-style vacuum-tube transit; no real deployments, so it shut down by Dec 31 2023.

What the business is

Developer of hyperloop transport: pods propelled through nearly airless tubes at very high speed, tested on a Nevada track; after early 2022 it focused on cargo rather than passengers.

Starting capitalAbout $450M raised since its 2014 founding, per The Verge.

How it started

Hyperloop One began in 2014 as Hyperloop Technologies, renamed Hyperloop One in 2016 and Virgin Hyperloop One after Richard Branson invested in 2017. The pitch was aluminum capsules in near-vacuum tubes traveling up to 760mph — Los Angeles to San Francisco in 30 minutes.

What happened

The company lurched through turmoil: it settled a 2017 lawsuit with co-founder Brogan BamBrogan, ousted co-founder Shervin Pishevar in 2018 amid misconduct allegations, and lost Branson as chairman after Saudi Arabia pulled a planned project when he criticized the kingdom over Jamal Khashoggi's killing. Dubai port operator DP World took majority control, and in early 2022 Hyperloop One cut half its staff, dropped the Virgin name and pivoted from passengers to cargo. Its only test with human passengers, in 2020, reached 100mph.

How it ended up

Shut down: in December 2023 Hyperloop One said it would cease operations on December 31, laying off its remaining staff and selling assets; majority owner DP World receives the intellectual property and the Nevada test track goes on the block.

Background

Hyperloop One was the most ambitious attempt to turn Elon Musk's 2013 hyperloop white paper into real infrastructure: aluminum pods in near-vacuum tubes traveling at up to 760mph, cutting Los Angeles to San Francisco to 30 minutes. Founded in 2014 as Hyperloop Technologies, it raised about $450M and built a test track in Nevada.

The company cycled through founders and strategies. It settled a lawsuit with co-founder Brogan BamBrogan, ousted co-founder Shervin Pishevar amid misconduct allegations, and lost chairman Richard Branson after Saudi Arabia shelved a planned project. DP World took majority control and pivoted the startup to cargo in early 2022, cutting half the staff. Its only human passenger test, in 2020, reached 100mph — far below the promised speed.

In December 2023 Hyperloop One said it would shut down on December 31, laying off remaining employees and selling assets including the Nevada test track. Majority owner DP World keeps the intellectual property. No full-scale hyperloop operates anywhere in the world.

What has to be true

  • No customer ever signed: nine years of demos and test tracks produced no contract to build a working hyperloop, so the company ran entirely on investor capital.
  • Infrastructure cost physics: vacuum tubes across cities need public money and rights of way, which no startup balance sheet can command.
  • Leadership churn: co-founder lawsuits, an ouster, a departing chairman and a passenger-to-cargo pivot repeatedly reset the strategy.
  • One-project dependence: losing the Saudi project after Branson's remarks removed what looked like the first real deployment.

What can be applied

A vision needs an order, not just investors: Hyperloop One raised $450M but never won a build contract, so the demo became the product. Capital keeps moonshots alive; only revenue validates one.

Aftermath

As of December 21, 2023, Hyperloop One was winding down: most staff laid off, offices closing and the remaining employees' employment ending on December 31. DP World, the majority owner, receives the company's intellectual property, while hard assets including the Nevada test track and machinery were being sold. No full-scale hyperloop operates anywhere in the world.
