What the business is
InsuranceDekho is an insurance brokerage with direct integrations to 46 insurers offering 380+ products, founded inside the CarDekho group
Starting capital
Verak was backed by Sequoia and Lightspeed; the acquihire terms were undisclosed
How it started
Verak began as BimaPe, founder Rahul Mathur's previous venture, which shut its operations and rebranded as Verak in September 2021 to distribute SME insurance, covering shops, restaurants, godowns, factories and kirana stores.
What happened
In April 2023 InsuranceDekho — founded by Ankit Agrawal and Ish Babbar within the CarDekho group — acquihired Verak, consolidating its team including Mathur to strengthen its SME insurance vertical and expand into micro-business insurance. Verak said 99% of its customers were first-time buyers of business insurance and it aimed to insure 10 lakh businesses by March 2027. The buyer's own numbers showed a scaling business burning to grow: FY22 revenue up 61% to Rs 47.91 crore, but losses up 55.6% to Rs 72.29 crore, contributing only 3% of CarDekho group revenue of Rs 1,597 crore.
What has to be true
Verak's customer base is almost entirely first-time business-insurance buyers — a market InsuranceDekho wanted.
The acquihire brought founder Rahul Mathur and his SME distribution experience in-house.
InsuranceDekho had the insurer integrations (46) but needed micro-business distribution depth.
Its own FY22 numbers — losses up 55.6% — show it was buying growth rather than waiting for organic reach.
What can be applied
An acquihire can be a market-entry tool: the incoming team arrives with the customer base and category knowledge, not just the headcount.
Aftermath
As of 4 April 2023 Verak's team was consolidating into InsuranceDekho's SME vertical. No financial terms were disclosed, and Verak's 10-lakh-businesses-by-2027 target became an InsuranceDekho ambition.
