What the business is
Slash built UPI payments and an e-commerce storefront product for Shopify merchants in India.
How it started
Laman Ansari and Rahul Mahajan founded Delhi-based Slash under Greenbacks Technologies Private Limited, building UPI payments and an e-commerce store product for Shopify merchants, with Elevation Capital and Tanmay Bhat among its investors.
What happened
By 2023 the company was in a cash crunch and couldn't raise its Series A; chief executive Ansari moved on in April, later picking up machine-learning consulting work at Anthropic. Slash spent six months exploring M&A and held talks with several large fintech companies before Finix Partners — the family office of ex-BharatPe cofounder Bhavik Koladiya, who also leads SaaS startup OTPless — emerged as the buyer.
How it ended up
All stakeholders — founders and investors — exited, and the entire workforce left or was let go; Finix Partners retained the IP, trademark and other assets. Koladiya said the Slash app would be revamped and relaunched for new users. The deal size was not disclosed.
What has to be true
Slash's failure mode was funding, not product: it had live offerings in UPI payments and Shopify storefronts but couldn't close a Series A.
Six months of talks with larger fintechs ended in a family-office asset purchase — strategic buyers passed at whatever terms were asked.
The clean-sweep structure — founders, investors, staff all out — turned the sale into a pure IP acquisition, the cheapest way to relaunch a product.
The buyer knew the payments trenches: Koladiya built BharatPe and ran OTPless, so Finix Partners was betting on execution know-how rather than the incumbent team.
Entrackr's queries to the cofounders and Elevation Capital went unanswered — a quiet, negotiated end rather than a public collapse.
What can be applied
When the funding market closes, an asset sale strips a startup to its IP: a family office can relaunch the product with no team and no investors — but the company that raised on the vision is gone.
Aftermath
As of 16 August 2023 the deal size was undisclosed, the original Slash entity had ceased operating with its team dispersed, and Koladiya said only that the revamped Slash app would relaunch under Finix Partners' portfolio. Entrackr could not reach the cofounders or Elevation Capital for comment.
