ISSEN's anti-gamification bet: an AI voice tutor you talk back to

ISSEN is an AI voice language tutor: learners hold spoken conversations with a multilingual tutor that adapts speed, patience, formality and complexity, and it turns sentences the user actually said into spaced-repetition flashcards.

That learners stall in apps because scripted, gamified drills avoid real speech, so an adaptive AI voice tutor could out-teach them through free-flowing conversation.

Mariano Sorgente, a former Chia Network and a16z engineer who taught himself Japanese, and Anton Apostolatos, a trilingual engineer who spent seven years at Palantir, met at Stanford, joined Y Combinator's Fall 2024 batch and built ISSEN on the claim that no app provided truly free-flowing dialogue.

The team's hardest engineering problem was speech recognition for accented learners: ISSEN runs several speech-to-text models and reconciles the results rather than trusting one. HN commenters debated beginner handling and signup bugs, while the founders explained multilingual support built from providers chosen per language, using Minimax for Chinese, for example.

The app went live on the web with iOS and Android versions following. By July 2026, YesPress reported more than 500,000 Google Play downloads, an App Store rating around 4.7 stars from about 2,800 reviews, and 50-plus supported languages, run by a still-small team of about three people.

Avoiding gamification was a positioning bet: ISSEN could stand for real speech in a category where incumbents optimize engagement loops, giving it a clean story for HN and press.

Listening was the real moat problem: a learner's accent breaks single speech-to-text models, so the team stacked and reconciled several STT engines to make conversation usable.

Adaptive personality controls, from speaking speed to patience and formality, made the tutor feel personal in a way scripted lessons cannot, without needing expensive per-user human teachers.

The team admitted the beginner experience was still improving and focused on intermediate-to-advanced learners, a restraint that helped build trust with skeptical reviewers.

A small team of around three kept costs low while subscription pricing, roughly $20–40 a month, monetized the product directly from launch.

Competitors optimize streaks; ISSEN bet the bottleneck is real speech, so it invested in listening and conversation design, and the traction followed from the demo rather than the game.

As of 2026-07-29, ISSEN is a subscription app available on web, iOS and Android, supporting more than 50 languages from Spanish and Japanese to Mandarin, Danish and Cantonese. YesPress reported over 500,000 Google Play downloads and about 2,800 App Store reviews averaging 4.7 stars, with pricing around $20–40 per month and cheaper annual plans. The founders say the product fits intermediate-to-advanced learners best and that the beginner experience is still improving; the company remains a small technical team of about three after its YC Fall 2024 batch.
