What the business is
Mobile app of AI avatar tutors for English practice — speaking-first lessons with pronunciation and grammar feedback, sold by subscription.
The bet
That talking to a persona-locked AI avatar feels human enough that English learners in emerging markets pay subscription money instead of grinding gamified drills.
Starting capital
$2.5M seed led by Creator Ventures and Blue Wire Capital, then a $35.5M Series A led by Blossom Capital in May 2024. Angel backers include ElevenLabs' Carles Reina and footballer Patrice Evra.
How it started
Founders Adam Turaev, Anton Marin and Ilya Chernyakov ran Cleverbots, an AI agency whose clients included Coca-Cola, Kimberly-Clark and AstraZeneca, where they built AI language coaches for executives. In 2022 they spun the same idea into a consumer app: a private English tutor that costs a subscription, not an hourly rate.
What happened
The app launched on the App Store in May 2022 and reached 1.2M monthly active users in 100 countries with roughly $20M of trailing revenue by spring 2024. Praktika orchestrates GPT-4, Gemini, Claude and Mistral behind the avatars and trains on terabytes of anonymized learner conversations. Positioning was explicit: the AI-native challenger to Duolingo's gamified exercises, selling 'human-to-human feel' instead of streaks.
What has to be true
Founder-market fit was real: years of building AI tutors for corporate clients meant the team already knew what conversational practice data and product looked like.
Emerging-market English learners are a huge, paying audience priced out of human tutors — a $20-a-month avatar undercutting $20-an-hour humans is a clean wedge.
LLMs finally made the format possible; before 2023, avatar tutors could not hold a natural, personalized spoken conversation.
Duolingo's scale validated the market while leaving the speaking-first niche open — Praktika attacked the format incumbent, not the incumbent's strengths.
What can be applied
A thin AI wrapper wins when the format changes the feel, not just the model: 'talking to a person' beat gamified drills for a million paying learners.
Aftermath
As of September 2026 Praktika is still shipping updates (latest App Store version 2026-09-08) and holds about 163,000 US ratings at 4.75 — a fraction of Duolingo's 5.4 million, but top-tier for an app launched in 2022. The avatar-English niche it opened is now crowded; rivals such as Learna have piled up ratings faster on a later start. No exit or new funding round has been announced since the 2024 Series A.
