How it started

Founder and CEO John Ferrara, who grew up around US Navy deployments, spent years in inertial positioning research and concluded any truly global positioning system must deploy without physical installation. He started Juxta (founded 2024 per YC), joined YC's Summer 2025 batch as a solo founder, and built a seven-person team of mostly engineers.

What happened

Juxta launched publicly via YC in April 2026, claiming GPS-level accuracy, 10x global coverage, and offline, unjammable operation with zero external hardware. It raised just over $5M led by CRV. By February 2026 it had three paying customers with low-to-mid six-figure annual contracts across defense, logistics, and healthcare, plus deals such as robotics maker RC Mowers and a healthcare LOI, with first deployments starting March 2026.

Background

Juxta is a San Francisco startup building what it calls the Universal Positioning System (UPS): software-only tracking for phones, robots, vehicles, and machinery that works indoors, underground, outdoors, and offline. Instead of satellites, beacons, or cameras, it uses the inertial sensors (accelerometers and gyroscopes) already inside devices, claiming GPS-level accuracy with 10x the coverage.

The founding bet came from CEO John Ferrara, who spent years on inertial positioning and reasoned that any truly global positioning system must deploy without physical installation: "I can't possibly go to every corner of the earth and install beacons." The core technique is synthetic fingerprinting - simulating millions of hyper-realistic movement paths in vectorized 3D spaces to train models that reduce IMU drift by over 90%, letting a warehouse be mapped and activated remotely in about an hour.

Juxta joined YC's Summer 2025 batch and raised just over $5M led by CRV. By February 2026 it had three paying customers with low-to-mid six-figure annual contracts across defense, logistics, and healthcare, plus deals such as robotics maker RC Mowers, and its first deployments were set to begin March 2026.

The pitch is that GPS is unreliable where most human activity happens - indoors and in dense, obstructed, or jammed environments - while beacon systems cost upwards of $250,000 per site to install and maintain. What has to be true

  • GPS is unreliable where most activity happens - indoors, underground, in dense urban areas - yet every alternative so far required installing beacons costing hundreds of thousands of dollars per site.
  • Synthetic fingerprinting attacks the core technical barrier, IMU drift, by simulating movement at scale, and makes deployment remote instead of physical.

It has three paying customers (defense, logistics, healthcare) at low-to-mid six-figure contracts, first deployments from March 2026, and a seven-person engineering team per Ferrara's interview. In July 2026 it showed an ultra-portable asset tag at Geo Week and announced a TPIsoftware partnership for satellite-free positioning in security sectors. The long-term pitch is a full GPS replacement, including search-and-rescue use cases.
