How it started
Founded in 2023 in Fremont, California by Eric Lander (Human Genome Project leader), Keith LeChien (former pulsed magnetic fusion lead at LLNL and inertial confinement fusion director at NNSA), Will Regan, and former national-laboratory colleagues, betting that decades of US government investment in pulsed power could be converted into an affordable energy system.

Background
Pacific Fusion's bet is that the fastest path to commercial fusion is not a new confinement concept but the industrialization of pulsed power: the technology behind Sandia National Laboratories' Z machine, proven over decades of government research. Founded in 2023 by Eric Lander, Keith LeChien, Will Regan and former national-laboratory colleagues, the Fremont, California company builds shipping-container-sized pulser modules from mass-manufacturable bricks of capacitors and switches, then fires them in synchronized bursts to magnetically squeeze deuterium-tritium fuel.
The strategy attracted the largest Series A ever for a private fusion company: over $900M, led by General Catalyst and backed by investors including Bill Gates, announced when the company exited stealth in November 2024. In June 2026 Pacific Fusion said it had validated a scaled prototype delivering ~440 GW peak power and ~1.1 MV in an 80-nanosecond pulse after more than 1,000 qualification shots, and that a production-scale module was on track for later that year.
In August 2026 the company broke ground on a $1B Research and Manufacturing Campus in Albuquerque, New Mexico, adjacent to national-security research infrastructure, and signed an MoU with DOE's NNSA covering pulsed-power technology, advanced materials and modeling. Its demonstration system of 156 modules is designed to exceed 100 megajoules per burst and is targeting net facility gain — more fusion energy out than stored in the machine — by 2030, as a stepping stone to commercial power plants.
