What the business is
Lemon Cash is an Argentine crypto app built around saving and spending in dollar-pegged stablecoins.
The bet
That Argentines' everyday, inflation-hedged crypto habit — 2.2M active users, stablecoin volumes 10x BTC/ETH — could be transplanted to Brazil
How it started
Lemon launched in Brazil in mid-2022, planning daily crypto yields credited each Monday, balances usable in DeFi protocols, and a CDI-yield account paid in crypto.
What happened
Founder Marcelo Cavazzoli said Brazil's market is trading-oriented and speculative, unlike Argentina, where the peso's 97% fall over five years taught everyday crypto use. 'Our product is a bit ahead of what Brazil is today... We're here to make a better world or a casino? That's the question.' In Argentina, dollar-parity stablecoins ran ten times the business of bitcoin and ether.
How it ended up
The Brazilian operation was resized, with most of the local team dismissed. Lemon kept investing in Brazilian community building and planned to launch its Visa card in Brazil in early 2024.
What has to be true
Product-market fit in crypto is macro-dependent: Lemon's Argentine flywheel runs on currency collapse, which Brazil didn't replicate.
Brazilian demand that existed was for trading — a mission mismatch the founder refused to bridge ('Is it a casino?').
Downsizing to a community-and-cards footprint preserved the option to return without paying a full operation's burn.
What can be applied
Crypto adoption follows monetary pain, not market size: a product tuned to peso-crisis hedging lands flat in a country whose crypto demand is speculative trading.
Aftermath
As of November 2023 Lemon ran a reduced Brazilian footprint with a Visa card launch planned for early 2024, while its Argentine home market — 2.2 million active users — remained the core.
