After a weekend NYC AI hackathon in October 2024, Gatsby co-founder Sam Bhagwat and core teammates Shane and Abhi concluded the tooling for building agents 'just sucked' and decided to build it themselves. They joined YC's Winter 2025 batch, and by mid-February the project was taking off: it went viral on Hacker News and GitHub, going from 1,500 to 7,500 stars in a week.

Background
Mastra is an open-source TypeScript framework for building AI agents, created by the core team behind Gatsby. After a weekend AI hackathon in October 2024, co-founder Sam Bhagwat and teammates Shane and Abhi concluded that the tooling for building agents 'just sucked' and decided to build the framework themselves, joining Y Combinator's Winter 2025 batch.
The bet was that TypeScript — not Python — would become the default language for building AI agents, and that open primitives for workflows, agents, memory, evals and tracing would win the production layer. Teams at Replit, SoftBank, Adobe, PayPal, Brex, Indeed, Marsh McLennan, MongoDB, Workday and Salesforce build with it, and total funding stands at $35M.
