Midday's open-source bet: 14k-star business OS, then a Ramp acquisition in 2026

Two Stockholm founders built an open-source business OS for freelancers in public; 14,000+ GitHub stars led to a 2026 Ramp acqui-hire.

What the business is

Midday is an open-source business management platform for freelancers and micro-businesses: time tracking, invoicing, receipt-to-bank reconciliation, file storage and financial insights in one app, self-hostable or cloud-hosted.

How it started

In 2023 Pontus Abrahamsson and Viktor Hofte — a two-person team in Stockholm — started Midday as a side project to automate bookkeeping. On 2024-06-20 they posted 'Show HN: Midday – Run your business smarter (open-source)', presenting an open platform for micro-businesses, freelancers and contractors with time tracking, invoicing and financial insights, built in public with open metrics.

What happened

The product grew through its repo and community: users filed issues, built integrations and followed the founders' public build log. In August 2025 the founders shipped and open-sourced an automatic receipt-to-transaction matching engine ('Auto-Match', Show HN with 39 points) and kept shipping as a two-person company. Ramp — the US spend-management platform with 50,000+ customers — had been following the work for years, per its VP of Design.

How it ended up

Announced 2026-05-06 that Midday is joining Ramp: the founders join Ramp's product team, the Midday product is wound down over three months with refunds on annual plans and a full data export path, and accounts stay active for 90 days.

Background

Midday is an open-source business management platform built by two people in Stockholm: Pontus Abrahamsson and Viktor Hofte. It combines time tracking, invoicing, receipt-to-bank reconciliation, file storage and financial insights for freelancers and micro-businesses, and can be self-hosted or used as a cloud app.

The bet was that an open-source, transparently built financial tool could win users who distrust closed fintech: the repo was the growth engine, every update was shipped in public, and the founders ran the company as an 'open startup' with public metrics. On 2024-06-20 the Show HN post ('Run your business smarter (open-source)') drew 119 points and 36 comments, and the GitHub repo passed 14,000 stars.

After two years of organic growth, the story ended in an acqui-hire: on 2026-05-06 Ramp announced that Midday was joining it, with the founders joining Ramp's product team. Midday's product is being wound down over three months, with annual-plan refunds, a full data-export path and accounts staying active for 90 days.

What has to be true

  • The open-source distribution bet is documented end to end: repo stars, a Show HN thread, and a two-person team shipping a real financial product in public.
  • It shows a rare failure-proof outcome for an indie tool: even without a big revenue story, a well-crafted open-source product became a talent acquisition for a category leader.
  • The product thesis was contrarian — privacy and self-hosting against QuickBooks-style lock-in — and it won a developer-literate audience that later followed the founders to Ramp.
  • The wind-down terms (refunds, exports, 90-day access) are a concrete example of how an open-source community gets treated in an acquisition.

What can be applied

Distribution can come before revenue: an open-source repo built the audience and trust that made the founders' next employer obvious — craft in public compounds into an exit.

Aftermath

As of 2026-09-02, Midday as a standalone product is being wound down after the Ramp acquisition announced on 2026-05-06: the repo remains open source on GitHub, founders Pontus Abrahamsson and Viktor Hofte work at Ramp, and the community can still fork and use the code. The company story is closed, but the repo and its integrations live on.
