NetShort's translated-AI drama bet: No. 1 global short-drama downloads with 23M in July

Chongqing MCN Maiya Media's NetShort exported Chinese short dramas via translation and AI, topping July 2026 overseas short-drama downloads at 23M+ per month.

The betThat Chinese short dramas can win globally without local shoots: ship translated shows first, add AI dramas later, and win via heavy UA instead of Hollywood budgets.Scaling

What the business is

NetShort is Maiya Media's global short-drama streaming app: thousands of translated Chinese dramas plus AI-generated comic and live-action-style shows, monetized via episode unlocks and subscriptions, distributed mainly through paid acquisition in North America, Europe, Southeast Asia and Latin America.

How it started

Maiya Media was founded in Chongqing in 2015 as a WeChat-content MCN and pivoted to micro-dramas in 2023, growing to about 3,000 staff with 8B+ cumulative followers across its accounts. NetShort launched around mid-2024 as the company's overseas platform, joining ReelShort, DramaBox and ShortMax in the short-drama export race.

What happened

NetShort's early hits were translated Chinese dramas, proving subtitles could travel. By April 2026, CEO Wang Li reported roughly 1M daily downloads and $750K daily revenue, with 130M+ cumulative downloads in 40+ countries and repeated top-10 free entertainment chart placements in North America, Europe and Southeast Asia (China News Service); he described NetShort as first-tier in overseas AI short drama. In Q2 2026 Sensor Tower recorded growth in both downloads and revenue.

How it ended up

Scaling: DataEye's July 2026 report ranked NetShort No. 1 in overseas short-drama app downloads (23M+ for the month, +25% MoM) and inside the top-3 revenue apps alongside DramaBox and ReelShort, in a month when the whole category booked $273M in IAP revenue.

Background

NetShort is the overseas short-drama app of Maiya Media, a Chongqing company that started in 2015 as a WeChat-content MCN and pivoted to micro-dramas in 2023. Its bet: Chinese short dramas can win globally without Hollywood-style production. Instead of shooting $200–300K local dramas like ReelShort, NetShort shipped translated Chinese hits first, then layered in AI-generated comic and live-action-style shows as generation costs fell.

The translation-first strategy worked. By April 2026 CEO Wang Li reported roughly 1M daily downloads and $750K daily revenue, 130M+ cumulative downloads across 40+ countries, and repeated top-10 free entertainment chart placements in North America, Europe and Southeast Asia. In Q2 2026 Sensor Tower recorded growth in both downloads and revenue.

In July 2026 NetShort hit No. 1 in overseas short-drama downloads with more than 23M for the month (+25% MoM) and stayed in the top-3 revenue apps alongside DramaBox and ReelShort — the trio took nearly half of the top-20's IAP income in a month where the category booked $273M. The win came as AI dramas grew from 2% of top-100 ad materials in January 2026 to 16% in March.

The open question is durability: overseas short-drama apps grew from roughly 200 to 1,100 during 2025, and heavy UA makes chart positions buyable. NetShort is betting AI supply — comic and AI 'human' dramas produced in days for a few thousand dollars — keeps its catalog ahead of the crowd while incumbents and new entrants pile in.

What has to be true

  • Maiya inverted the incumbent playbook: instead of paying $200–300K per local shoot, NetShort exported Chinese hits with subtitles, so catalog cost was a fraction of Hollywood-style production.
  • Distribution was the wedge: heavy paid UA put NetShort into top-10 entertainment charts across North America, Europe and Southeast Asia before rivals could match volume.
  • AI collapsed the supply bottleneck — comic and AI live-action dramas can be produced in days for a few thousand dollars — letting NetShort flood the market as the category opened.
  • Chart share converted into revenue fast: the top-3 apps took nearly half of top-20 IAP income, and NetShort reached ~$750K daily revenue by April 2026.

What can be applied

A supply-side cost edge (translation/AI instead of local shoots) plus relentless UA can top a global chart fast; easy supply invites imitators, so the edge must move from cost to brand and retention.

Aftermath

As of 2026-09-02 NetShort is scaling as the No. 1 overseas short-drama app by July 2026 downloads (23M+, +25% MoM) and a top-3 IAP earner. It reported ~1M daily downloads and ~$750K daily revenue in April 2026, 130M+ cumulative downloads across 40+ countries, and Q2 2026 growth confirmed by Sensor Tower. Maiya continues to push AI-generated dramas as the next supply layer while competition intensifies — overseas short-drama IAP hit $273M in July 2026 and app counts are still climbing.
