What the business is
newmo runs taxi and Japanese-style ride-share services, pairing taxi-company operations with dispatch, leasing, and driver apps.
The bet
Japan's cautious ride-share opening would reward a startup that bought taxi capacity instead of fighting taxi regulation.
Starting capital
About JPY18.7B cumulative funding by October 2024, including about JPY16.7B in Series A rounds.
How it started
Naoki Aoyagi left Mercari's Japan business in late 2023 and founded newmo in January 2024, just as Japan prepared a taxi-operator-led ride-share system.
What happened
MLIT said the self-owned-car utilization system would start in April 2024 in areas including Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, and Kyoto, with expansion based on measured taxi shortages. newmo bought control of Osaka taxi operators Kishiko and Miraito, began Japanese-style ride-share service in Osaka in July, and raised an additional JPY6.3B in October.
What has to be true
The regulation opened demand while keeping operational responsibility with taxi companies.
newmo's M&A-heavy entry matched the legal structure instead of waiting for full deregulation.
Large domestic investors could underwrite expansion because the company controlled vehicles and licensed operations.
What can be applied
In a newly opened but constrained market, owning the regulated incumbent layer can be a faster wedge than trying to route around it.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-17, newmo was still positioned as a regulated mobility operator, expanding from Osaka toward other Japanese regions while the national ride-share framework remained limited and data-driven.
