Digital insurance built and sold online for small and medium-sized businesses, headquartered in Palo Alto.

That $2.6B from a strategic owner beat waiting out a market that had marked the company down from its 2021 peak — joining Ergo instead of riding out the dip alone.

Nearly $1.2B raised over its lifetime (per Crunchbase), including $265M in late 2023 from Allstate and Allianz X at a $2.5B valuation.

Founded in 2016 in Palo Alto to sell insurance online to small and medium-sized businesses. Group 11 backed it from 2017 and followed on in 2018, 2019 and 2020; later backers included Allstate, Allianz X, Battery Ventures, Capital G, Redpoint, Nationwide, Amex Ventures and Ribbit Capital.

Next was valued at $4B in 2021, then took $265M from Allstate and Allianz X in late 2023 at a $2.5B valuation. Even as the valuation fell, the business grew: the company reported a top line of $548M in 2024, more than 600,000 customers and roughly 700 employees.

On March 20, 2025 Munich Re signed a definitive agreement to acquire Next Insurance for $2.6B, purchasing the 71% of shares it did not already own (per Globes). Next becomes part of Munich Re's Ergo unit, with closing expected in Q3 2025 pending regulatory approvals.

A $1.2B-funded insurtech chose a strategic exit at $2.6B rather than waiting out a market that had valued it at $4B in 2021.

Munich Re converted a 29% minority stake into full ownership, a reinsurer absorbing the digital challenger it had already backed.

Revenue held up through the valuation reset — $548M in 2024 and 600,000+ customers — so the exit priced the market cycle, not the business.

Strategic owners price steady SMB cash flows differently from growth funds: a reinsurer holding 29% paid $2.6B for the rest of a company that private markets had marked down from $4B.

As of the March 20, 2025 announcement, Next Insurance continued operating independently with the Munich Re acquisition expected to close in Q3 2025, after which it becomes part of Ergo. At signing the company reported $548M in 2024 revenue, more than 600,000 customers and about 700 employees.
