Nifty Gateway, the NFT boom's flagship marketplace, shut down Feb 23 2026

Nifty Gateway rode the 2021 NFT boom with Beeple's record sales, then Gemini shut its credit-card-friendly marketplace down on Feb 23, 2026

Nifty Gateway

The betThat curated, celebrity-backed digital-art drops could make NFTs a mainstream market — and that a custodial, card-friendly marketplace would be how people bought them.No longer exists

What the business is

A custodial NFT marketplace owned by Gemini where collectors bought digital art with credit or debit cards through curated drops, without managing crypto wallets.

How it started

Founded by twin brothers Duncan and Griffin Cock Foster as a curated marketplace for digital art, Nifty Gateway was acquired by the Winklevoss twins' crypto exchange Gemini in November 2019 — Gemini's first acquisition. The founders believed a card-friendly, custodial platform could bring digital art collecting to mainstream consumers.

What happened

Nifty Gateway became synonymous with the 2021 NFT boom: Beeple's $6.6M platform sale in February 2021 was followed weeks later by his $69.3M Christie's auction, and the platform hosted drops from Eminem, Grimes and The Weeknd while reporting about $300M in 2021 gross merchandise value. As the market shifted to avatar collections and decentralized rivals like OpenSea and Blur, the Cock Foster brothers stepped down in January 2023, the platform was rebranded Nifty Gateway Studio, and its Discord channels were shut down in late 2024.

How it ended up

On January 23, 2026 Gemini announced Nifty Gateway would close on February 23, 2026 and put the platform in withdrawal-only mode so users could move their NFTs and funds. Gemini gave no specific reason beyond sharpening focus on its 'one-stop super app,' making Nifty Gateway another casualty of the NFT market collapse.

Background

Nifty Gateway was a curated NFT marketplace founded by twin brothers Duncan and Griffin Cock Foster, and acquired by the Winklevoss twins' crypto exchange Gemini in November 2019 — Gemini's first acquisition. Its model made buying digital art easy: a custodial platform where collectors paid with credit or debit cards instead of managing crypto wallets, with scarce curated drops from famous artists.

The platform became the face of the 2021 NFT boom. Beeple sold a piece for $6.6M on Nifty Gateway in February 2021, a then-record that preceded his $69.3M Christie's auction, and the platform hosted drops from Eminem, Grimes and The Weeknd while reporting about $300M in gross merchandise value for the year. A Pak collection sold together with Sotheby's went for $17M.

The market then collapsed: NFT trading volume fell to $1.25B in Q4 2025, down 28% from the prior quarter, a small fraction of the more than $50B seen at the 2022 peak. The Cock Foster brothers had stepped down in January 2023 and the platform was rebranded Nifty Gateway Studio. On January 23, 2026 Gemini announced the closure, citing only a sharper focus on its 'one-stop super app,' and Nifty Gateway shut down on February 23, 2026 after a withdrawal-only period.

What has to be true

  • Nifty Gateway bet that curation, celebrity drops and card simplicity would make digital art mainstream — a bet that looked right in 2021 but depended on speculative demand that evaporated.
  • The custodial, card-friendly model lowered the barrier to entry but left the platform fully exposed when the NFT bubble burst and volumes fell to a fraction of their peak.
  • After the founders left in January 2023, Nifty Gateway became a non-core asset of a parent focused on its exchange, making it easy to close when the market stayed weak.
  • A marketplace with no moat beyond the boom itself had no standalone business case: Gemini's closure note offered only a strategic-focus rationale.

What can be applied

A marketplace lives and dies with category demand: Nifty Gateway's curated, card-friendly model rode the 2021 NFT boom, but when volumes collapsed it had no business case and Gemini shut it down.

Aftermath

As of September 2026, Nifty Gateway is closed: it entered withdrawal-only mode on January 23, 2026 and shut down on February 23, 2026, after its withdrawal window was extended to three months following user backlash. Gemini continues to operate its exchange and Gemini Wallet, which it said would keep supporting NFTs, and the closure became another marker of the post-boom NFT market's decline.
