Founded by twin brothers Duncan and Griffin Cock Foster as a curated marketplace for digital art, Nifty Gateway was acquired by the Winklevoss twins' crypto exchange Gemini in November 2019 — Gemini's first acquisition. The founders believed a card-friendly, custodial platform could bring digital art collecting to mainstream consumers.

Nifty Gateway became synonymous with the 2021 NFT boom: Beeple's $6.6M platform sale in February 2021 was followed weeks later by his $69.3M Christie's auction, and the platform hosted drops from Eminem, Grimes and The Weeknd while reporting about $300M in 2021 gross merchandise value. As the market shifted to avatar collections and decentralized rivals like OpenSea and Blur, the Cock Foster brothers stepped down in January 2023, the platform was rebranded Nifty Gateway Studio, and its Discord channels were shut down in late 2024.

On January 23, 2026 Gemini announced Nifty Gateway would close on February 23, 2026 and put the platform in withdrawal-only mode so users could move their NFTs and funds. Gemini gave no specific reason beyond sharpening focus on its 'one-stop super app,' making Nifty Gateway another casualty of the NFT market collapse.
