What the business is
A payroll and attendance app for Indian small and medium enterprises, offered in 12 Indian languages.
The bet
India's small businesses would digitise attendance and payroll on a multilingual phone app — a category big enough to fund brand-ambassador blitzes to win it.
How it started
Founders Adarsh Kumar, Rupesh Kumar Mishra and Arya Adarsha Gautam had shut their previous venture, regional-language knowledge platform GyanApp, in October 2019 — letting go 75% of the team — before building Pagarbook into one of India's hottest early-stage startups.
What happened
Sequoia's Surge took the company in late 2019; a $15M Series A from Sequoia India and India Quotient closed in December 2020, and actor Akshay Kumar signed on as brand ambassador in November 2020. In February 2021 a fingerprint-scanning attendance feature launched to severe customer blowback over glitches; the founders rolled it back in March and promised a new product line within six months. None came. In the last week of June 2021 — weeks after a $100M valuation — nearly the entire marketing and sales team was sacked over video call with immediate effect.
How it ended up
Over 80 layoffs confirmed, possibly 150–160 of roughly 650 staff per one senior executive (unconfirmed by Moneycontrol); some employees were still owed final dues, and mid-level marketing and design staff resigned voluntarily after the purge. The company was still hiring field sales on LinkedIn — its financial position remained unclear.
What has to be true
The timing inverts the market story: layoffs of this scale in mid-2021 India, when capital was abundant, signal internal failure rather than a downturn.
One failed feature triggered the purge — evidence that the growth spend was outrunning a product not ready for its audience.
The founders had been here before: GyanApp shut in October 2019 with 75% of the team let go, a rehearsal for the same pattern.
Well-funded competitors were closing in on the same SME payroll wedge, removing any slack for a misfired product cycle.
What can be applied
Headcount in sales and marketing is a bet on product readiness: when the product stumbles, the growth machine is the first asset liquidated — and it happens in public.
Aftermath
As of 26 July 2021 Pagarbook still listed about 30 openings for team leads and field sales executives on LinkedIn while some laid-off employees awaited final dues; no new product had followed the March rollback and the company's cash position remained unclear. The founders did not respond to Moneycontrol's detailed questions.
