AI-native spreadsheet platform: column prompts instruct per-cell agents that search and analyze public and private data

Spreadsheet cells driven by prompts — each cell its own agent searching vetted web and third-party data — replace manual research-and-entry busywork

$2M pre-seed from YC, Soma Capital and Pioneer Fund, plus angels Arash Ferdowsi, Harrison Chase, Eoghan McCabe and Jordan Singer

Anna Monaco, a 22-year-old product engineer and designer who taught herself to code building games and interned at Google and Microsoft, convinced Penn to let her graduate early and moved to San Francisco in January 2024 for Y Combinator with founding team members June Lee and Michael Alfano.

On 2024-09-04 Paradigm emerged from stealth. Instead of column headers, it offers column prompts instructing each cell's own agent, which pulls from millions of vetted web and third-party data points including Google, Crunchbase, Apollo and Hunter.io; single cells can chain multi-step crawls and reasoning, and 'macros with prompts' let other cells and spreadsheets serve as context. Monaco said there was 'tremendous interest' from VCs but deliberately held off raising more until full launch. The space is crowded — Hebbia, Wordware, Equals AI, Microsoft's Copilot in Excel and Gemini in Sheets — and she claimed differentiation on UX, data accuracy and proprietary data-provider partnerships.

Consulting, banking, recruiting and sales run on hours of manual spreadsheet research and data entry

Cheaper LLMs like GPT-4o and Llama made per-cell agent economics viable at scale

Data-provider partnerships give Paradigm proprietary data other spreadsheet AI tools cannot reach

Wrapping a familiar interface around cheap LLM agents can move AI from demo to daily work — if accuracy holds

As of 2024-09-04 Paradigm had released a test version to a limited group with a waitlist behind it, was deliberately staying pre-seed until full launch, and Monaco was simultaneously co-founding HackHer House, an all-female hacker house in San Francisco's Russian Hill.
