What the business is
Custom AI agents built per customer to automate compliance and operations tasks at fintech companies
The bet
A custom LLM agent given step-by-step procedures and public and private data can take over KYB, fraud and onboarding work at fintechs
Starting capital
$5M seed led by Initialized Capital, including a $1.75M pre-seed from Kindred Ventures; angels include Garry Tan and Brex co-CEO Henrique Dubugras
How it started
AJ Asver (Coinbase, then Brex) and Miguel Rios-Berrios (Twitter, then Brex) had been experimenting with large language models at the application layer earlier in 2023. They saw that chain-of-thought reasoning could let an agent follow a set of steps and pull on public and private data to automate manual work in operations teams at fintech startups.
What happened
Kindred Ventures' pre-seed of $1.75M helped them workshop Parcha, launch publicly in May 2023 and sign two first customers, Brex and crypto payments firm Bridge. It builds on Anthropic's Claude, with GPT-4 for some tools. Contracts were contingent on agents reaching accuracy targets, with a testing goal of 90%. The seed closed about two months after launch.
What has to be true
The founders knew fintech ops pain first-hand from product roles at Coinbase and Brex
Chain-of-thought LLM reasoning made step-following agents look feasible
Brex and Bridge agreed to pilot before revenue, giving investors named customers
What can be applied
Parcha sold accuracy-contingent contracts to two friendly customers before revenue, so the proof of an agent's reliability came before the seed round closed.
Aftermath
As of August 2023 Parcha was pre-revenue with two customers piloting, three staff and a plan to hire; pipeline numbers were the founders' own.
