What the business is
A Canadian bill payments and rewards app run by Paytm's Canada division, Paytm Labs, alongside its R&D work
The bet
A bill-payments and rewards app in Canada could extend Paytm's consumer payments business outside India
How it started
Paytm launched its Canada division, Paytm Labs Inc, in 2014 and started a bill payments rewards programme for users in 2018. A spokesperson later called the consumer app a small experiment.
What happened
Paytm Canada said in a blog post that it had to charge customers a convenience fee for bill payments from 2019. In January 2022 it disabled scheduled payments and top-ups for Paytm Cash, including email money transfers, Canada Post and bank transfers, with the app to end entirely on March 14.
How it ended up
Paytm told ET it did not expect job losses and that the Canada-based Paytm Labs would keep doing R&D analytics and technical support. A company executive said the app did not make sense to continue as it was not contributing significantly to revenue.
What has to be true
The Canada consumer app did not contribute significantly to revenue
Paytm wanted to concentrate resources on India after its November 2021 listing
A spokesperson described the Canada app as an immaterial B2C experiment
What can be applied
Paytm drew a line between its immaterial consumer experiment and its Canadian R&D hub, closing the first and keeping the second.
Aftermath
As of January 14, 2022 the app was set to close on March 14, 2022; Paytm Labs in Canada continued R&D analytics and technical support.
