Phoebe bets AI agents can be software's immune system; $17M seed led by GV and Cherry

Ex-Stripe Europe CEO and CIO build AI agents that fix software failures; €15.6M seed, Trainline and PPRO as early customers.

What the business is

An AI-powered reliability platform whose swarms of agents continuously monitor live system data, diagnose incidents and generate fixes, working read-only with existing observability tools.

Starting capital€15.6M ($17M) seed round co-led by GV and Cherry Ventures, announced 2025-08-19

How it started

Matt Henderson and James Summerfield, former CEO and CIO of Stripe Europe who had previously sold their machine-learning startup Rangespan to Google in 2014, founded Phoebe in London in 2024 after concluding that AI had transformed how code is written while software reliability tooling had not kept pace.

What happened

Phoebe rolled out with early customers including Trainline and PPRO: Trainline said work that used to take hours of piecing together logs and metrics now takes minutes, with time-to-resolution up to 90% faster and some incidents predicted and fixed before they caused disruption. On 2025-08-19 the company launched publicly with a €15.6M seed co-led by GV and Cherry Ventures, earmarked for expanding the agent platform, engineering and go-to-market.

No ending yet — it is still running.

Background

Phoebe is a London-based startup, founded in 2024 by Matt Henderson and James Summerfield — former CEO and CIO of Stripe Europe, who previously sold their machine-learning startup Rangespan to Google in 2014. Their bet: AI had transformed how code is written, but software reliability had not kept pace, so swarms of AI agents continuously reading logs, traces, commits and infrastructure metrics could replace the slow manual hunt for what broke.

The platform works read-only and vendor-agnostically with existing observability tools. When an incident emerges, agents explore multiple hypotheses at once, then generate code or configuration fixes — in some cases predicting and preempting failures before customers are affected. Early customers Trainline and PPRO reported time-to-resolution up to 90% faster; Trainline's reliability lead said work that took hours now takes minutes.

On 2025-08-19 Phoebe launched publicly with a €15.6M ($17M) seed round co-led by GV (Google Ventures) and Cherry Ventures. The founders frame the product as an 'immune system for software', and the funding is earmarked to expand the agent platform, grow the London engineering team and build out go-to-market for enterprise deployments across fintech, SaaS and digital commerce.

The open question is whether agent-based incident response earns trust at enterprise scale — and whether the up-to-90% speedup holds beyond early customers as Phoebe moves from seed-stage launch to broader adoption.

What has to be true

  • Henderson and Summerfield had run reliability-critical systems at Stripe Europe, giving them first-hand insight into how much engineering time incident investigation consumes.
  • Monitoring tools already flood teams with data; the bottleneck is interpretation, which is exactly the step AI agents can automate.
  • Early production wins with Trainline and PPRO gave Phoebe credibility and concrete speedup numbers before its public launch.
  • GV and Cherry Ventures both bet on the thesis that AI will fix software reliability, not just write code.

What can be applied

Win by doing the work incumbents don't: instead of another dashboard, embed agents that read monitoring data teams already have and act on it — a wedge competitors can't copy with a feature.

Aftermath

As of 2025-08-20, Phoebe is live with early customers including Trainline and PPRO, was hiring engineers in London to expand its platform, and had just launched publicly with a €15.6M seed co-led by GV and Cherry Ventures. No shutdown, acquisition or later funding event had been reported at that date.
