Photoroom's AI photo-editing bet: #1 app in 180+ countries at a $500M valuation

Paris startup bet sellers would pay for studio-quality product photos without a studio; 150M+ downloads and a $500M valuation later, it leads AI photo editing.

Photoroom

The betThat AI could replace the studio: sellers pay for professional product photos from phone snapshots, starting with background removal, growing into a full editor and API.Scaling

What the business is

Photoroom is an AI photo-editing app that turns phone snapshots of products into professional-looking images — background removal, AI backgrounds and scene expansion — for e-commerce sellers and consumers, plus a bulk image-editing API.

Starting capital$64M total raised through the Feb 2024 Series B ($43M round led by Balderton at a $500M valuation)

How it started

Founded in 2019 in Paris by Matthieu Rouif (ex-GoPro product lead) and CTO Eliot Andres, with Y Combinator backing. The idea came from watching marketplace sellers struggle to make product photos look professional; the YC application stated the long-term goal of letting anyone make professional edits without training.

What happened

Grew mainly through app-store distribution and reseller word of mouth. By February 2024 it had 150M downloads, processed 5 billion images a year and was described as the world's #1 AI photo-editing app across 180+ countries; it raised a $43M Series B led by Balderton at a $500M valuation, launched its own product-photography foundation model (Instant Diffusion), and ran an API used by Smartly, Printify, Faire, Bulgari and Netflix. Company-reported figures from March 2025 put cumulative downloads past 200M, with 2M+ in Japan and DAU up 12x since 2021.

How it ended up

Still scaling as of September 2026: enterprise clients include DoorDash, Wolt and Decathlon, and co-founder Eliot Andres moved from CTO to a board role in September 2026, replaced by a new CTO, while CEO Matthieu Rouif remains in charge.

Background

Photoroom is a Paris-based AI photo editor founded in 2019 by Matthieu Rouif and Eliot Andres with Y Combinator backing. It began as a background-removal tool for e-commerce sellers who needed professional-looking product photos but could not afford a studio; the founding goal was to let anyone make professional edits without training.

The bet was that AI could collapse the cost of studio-quality imagery, starting with the most painful seller task — cutting a product out of a phone photo and placing it on a clean background — and growing into a full editor with AI backgrounds, scene expansion and bulk processing. The company trained its own foundation models instead of wrapping third-party APIs, claiming image generation up to 40% faster than other visual AI platforms.

Distribution ran through the app stores and seller word of mouth. By February 2024 Photoroom had 150M downloads, processed 5 billion images a year and was described as the world's #1 AI photo-editing app across 180+ countries; it raised a $43M Series B led by Balderton at a $500M valuation, bringing total funding to $64M, and launched a product-photography foundation model plus an API used by Smartly, Printify, Faire, Bulgari and Netflix.

By March 2025 company-reported downloads had passed 200M (2M+ in Japan, DAU up 12x since 2021). As of September 2026 it still counts DoorDash, Wolt and Decathlon among enterprise clients, with co-founder Eliot Andres stepping from CTO to board member while CEO Matthieu Rouif continues to run the company.

What has to be true

  • Starting with background removal gave Photoroom a narrow, repeatable, painful job millions of sellers already paid for, instead of a vague 'AI photo editor'.
  • Training its own models kept speed, margins and features under its control, letting it ship capabilities that wrappers around third-party APIs could not.
  • A free consumer app, a paid pro subscription and a bulk API covered three different willingness-to-pay segments from one model.
  • App-store chart presence plus reseller word of mouth produced global consumer distribution without a paid marketing machine.

What can be applied

Pick one painful, repeatable job, own the model, then expand: Photoroom grew from background removal to a foundation model, API and 180-country consumer app without competing on price.

Aftermath

As of September 2026 Photoroom continues to operate and scale from Paris. Tech.eu reported on September 1, 2026 that co-founder Eliot Andres is stepping down from his executive role to remain a board member, with former Groupon executive Javier Sotelo taking over as CTO; CEO Matthieu Rouif stays in charge. Its enterprise clients include DoorDash, Wolt and Decathlon, and its most recently disclosed valuation is the ~€500M/$500M from the February 2024 Series B.
