Depop's social-feed resale bet pays twice: Etsy paid $1.6B, eBay $1.2B
Depop bet Gen Z would buy secondhand clothes from each other in a social feed; Etsy paid $1.625B in 2021 and eBay ~$1.2B in 2026 for the marketplace.
Depop
What the business is
Depop is a mobile-first marketplace where people buy and sell secondhand and vintage fashion; sellers run styled storefronts, build followers and present clothes as self-expression, making the app feel like a social feed rather than a catalog.
Starting capital:General Atlantic led a $62 million Series C in 2019 (Retail Gazette).
How it started
In 2011 Simon Beckerman — an entrepreneur and co-founder of the Italian fashion magazine PIG — started Depop at H-Farm, a tech incubator near Venice: first a commerce layer letting readers buy what they saw in editorial, then a mobile marketplace where anyone could list and sell their own clothes to each other. Headquarters moved to London in 2012.
What happened
Maria Raga, an early employee, became CEO in 2016 and drove international growth, pushing Depop toward Gen Z fashion culture. General Atlantic led a $62M Series C in 2019 as US traction built. In June 2021 Etsy agreed to pay $1.625B in cash for the marketplace, saying it wanted Gen Z and the fast-growing resale market; Depop then had 30 million registered users across 150 countries.
How it ended up
Etsy's ownership lasted under five years: eBay agreed in February 2026 to buy Depop for about $1.2B in cash, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority cleared the deal in mid-July, and the sale completed on July 30, 2026 for approximately $1.4B including purchase-price adjustments and interest. Depop keeps its brand, platform and London base under eBay.
Background
Depop began in 2011 at H-Farm, an Italian tech incubator near Venice, when entrepreneur Simon Beckerman — co-founder of fashion magazine PIG — built a way for readers to buy what they saw in editorial. The commerce layer grew into a marketplace: mobile-first and highly visual, where anyone could list, style and sell clothes to one another, with headquarters moving to London in 2012.
The bet was that resale could be social. Sellers built styled storefronts, cultivated followers and presented secondhand fashion as self-expression, making the app feel closer to a social feed than a catalog. The model took hold with younger shoppers seeking affordable, distinctive, sustainable alternatives to fast fashion: Maria Raga, CEO from 2016, drove international growth, General Atlantic led a $62M Series C in 2019, and by June 2021 Depop had 30 million registered users across 150 countries when Etsy agreed to pay $1.625B in cash.
Etsy's ownership lasted less than five years. As Etsy's growth slowed, it agreed in February 2026 to sell Depop to eBay for about $1.2B; the UK competition regulator cleared the deal mid-July, and the sale completed on July 30, 2026 for approximately $1.4B including purchase-price adjustments and interest. Depop retained its brand, platform and London base — a fifteen-year arc from an Italian incubator to a Gen Z resale brand bought twice by US marketplaces.
What has to be true
- Discovery ran on people, not paid placement: sellers' styled storefronts and followings made the feed itself the shop window.
- Community lock-in: buyers followed sellers they trusted, so switching platforms meant leaving a following and a curated aesthetic behind.
- Timing caught the resale wave as Gen Z turned against fast fashion's cost and waste, and the 2020 e-commerce boom inflated what Etsy would pay.
- A differentiated youth brand stayed valuable after the boom: eBay paid about $1.2B in 2026 for the same Gen Z audience Etsy had bought in 2021.
What can be applied
Sell identity, not goods: sellers with storefronts and followers made resale self-expression, and that community moat compounded through two buyouts — Etsy's $1.625B, then eBay's ~$1.2B.
Aftermath
As of July 30, 2026 eBay owns Depop: the sale closed at approximately $1.4B in cash — the $1.2B agreed price plus about $200M in net purchase-price adjustments and interest — after UK regulatory clearance. Etsy said it would use the proceeds for share repurchases and its core marketplace; eBay said Depop keeps its name, brand, community and product experience while gaining eBay's scale. Depop ended 2025 with about 7 million active buyers, nearly 90% under 34, more than 3 million sellers and roughly $1B in annual gross merchandise sales.
