What the business is
Pilot is a web app where travellers plan, book and share trips with friends, with an AI itinerary planner and affiliate booking.
The bet
That a collaborative, AI-assisted trip planner built like Google Docs or Strava, not a social network, will become the hub of group travel.
How it started
Connor Wilson, a serial entrepreneur, had the idea in 2019 while travelling in Europe. In 2020, just after COVID-19 halted travel, he set up the company with four founders. The beta launched in 2022 and, without proactive marketing, picked up 5,000 users.
What happened
By September 2023 users exceeded 20,000, still with no marketing. Its AI trip planner, Quickstart, generates an itinerary from the travel party's preferences and takes edit requests by chat. Users can book stays and flights, and Pilot earns commissions from vendors. Pilot said revenue had not been its focus. A mobile app was due later in 2023, and it plans to expand to Latin America and Asia.
What has to be true
Wilson saw travel planning as siloed, rigid and missing the social side of trips.
Collaboration tools like Google Docs showed a model for shared planning.
An AI planner lowers the effort of building an itinerary from group preferences.
Affiliate commissions let Pilot stay free for consumers.
What can be applied
Positioning against crowded AI travel apps as collaboration software, not an agency or social network, gave Pilot a distinct angle, though revenue was untested.
Aftermath
As of 2023-09-28 Pilot had over 20,000 users and no marketing spend, with monetisation still to be explored and a mobile app due later that year.
