Plata bets Mexico wants credit-first banking: card to unicorn to $5B bank in 3 years
Ex-Tinkoff bankers started with one Mexican credit card, reached 3.5M customers, and became a licensed bank — $405M Series C at $5B.
Plata
What the business is
Plata is a Mexican digital bank that began as Plata Card, a credit card with high limits, cashback and installments, built on proprietary AI credit scoring for thin credit histories; it launched full banking operations as Banco Plata in March 2026 and is authorized in Colombia.
Starting capital:A $160M Series A in March 2025 at a $1.5B valuation, a $120M bond in July 2025, about $410M across two 2025 equity rounds, and a $405M Series C in April 2026 at a $5B valuation — more than $2B in debt and equity in total
How it started
Plata was founded in 2022 by Neri Tollardo (an Italian economist and ex-Morgan Stanley equity analyst), Danil Anisimov, Alexander Bro and David Isakhanian — former executives of Russia's Tinkoff Bank — who believed the neobank playbook could be rebuilt for Mexico's underbanked. It launched its credit card in 2023 with a single-product strategy.
What happened
Growth was fast: over 1 million active cardholders by early 2025 and more than $300M revenue in the first half of 2025. In March 2025, Kora and Moore Strategic Ventures led a $160M Series A at a $1.5B valuation, making Plata a unicorn in under three years. It raised a $120M bond in July 2025, added an investments platform, and completed about $410M across two equity rounds in 2025 with Televisa Univision among the investors. After receiving its banking licence in December 2024 and final authorization in February 2026, it began full operations as Banco Plata in March 2026.
How it ended up
Still scaling: a $405M Series C in April 2026 led by Bicycle Capital with QIA, BTG Pactual and Kora valued Plata at $5B — the most valuable privately held digital bank in Latin America — with 3.5M+ active customers and $600M+ annualized revenue, plus authorization to operate a financing company in Colombia.
Background
Plata is a Mexican digital bank founded in 2022 by former Tinkoff Bank executives — Neri Tollardo (CEO), Danil Anisimov, Alexander Bro and David Isakhanian — who set out to rebuild the neobank playbook for Mexico. The company launched a single product in 2023: Plata Card, a credit card with limits up to MXN 200,000, cashback and installments, aimed at Mexicans whose thin credit files locked them out of traditional banking.
The bet was that Mexico's underbanked population would adopt a credit-first digital bank built on proprietary AI risk models and a cloud-native core — and that a single-product wedge could grow into a full bank. The numbers backed it up: over 1 million active cardholders by early 2025 and more than $300M in revenue in the first half of 2025. In March 2025, Kora and Moore Strategic Ventures led a $160M Series A at a $1.5B valuation, making Plata a unicorn in under three years.
Plata kept stacking proof. It raised a $120M bond in July 2025 (oversubscribed 1.7x), added an investments platform, and completed about $410M across two equity rounds in 2025 with Televisa Univision among the investors. After receiving its banking licence in December 2024 and final regulatory authorization in February 2026, it began full operations as Banco Plata in March 2026 — ahead of rivals Nu and Mercado Pago, which were still waiting for approval.
In April 2026, Bicycle Capital led a $405M Series C with Qatar Investment Authority, BTG Pactual and Kora participating, valuing Plata at $5 billion and making it the most valuable privately held digital bank in Latin America. With 3.5M+ active customers and more than $600M annualized revenue, plus authorization to operate a financing company in Colombia, the original credit-card bet has become a regional banking platform.
What has to be true
- The wedge was one product: a credit card for Mexicans with thin credit files, letting Plata prove its AI scoring before promising a full bank.
- Founder fit: ex-Tinkoff bankers had built a neobank in a tough market before, so they could copy what worked and skip what didn't.
- Proprietary tech (AI risk engine, cloud-native core, in-house build) kept unit economics in Plata's control instead of renting a partner bank's stack.
- Sequencing capital: unicorn Series A, then bonds and debt lines, then a $5B Series C — each milestone funded the next regulatory step.
What can be applied
Start with the one product the market lacks, not the whole bank: Plata's credit-first wedge let it prove AI scoring on thin credit files, then borrow trust and capital to become a bank.
Aftermath
As of September 2026, Plata is LatAm's most valuable private digital bank at a $5B valuation, with 3.5M+ active customers and $600M+ annualized revenue. Banco Plata runs full banking operations in Mexico (launched March 2026) and is authorized for a financing company in Colombia, with deposits and regional expansion planned. It has raised over $2B in debt and equity with 800+ STEM staff building its proprietary core, CRM and AI risk engine. The open test is whether it can extend credit leadership into deposits and compete head-on with Nu and Mercado Pago chasing their own bank licences.
