Traive bets AI risk models unlock Brazil's agri credit: BB round, 70k farmers
A Brazilian couple built Traive at MIT to score farm-loan risk with AI; 70,000+ farmers and ~$1B in credit later, Banco do Brasil and BASF VC are investors.
Traive
What the business is
Traive is an agri-credit platform: its AI scores the risk of farm-loan portfolios in real time and connects ag-input companies, distributors and cooperatives to capital markets, so the whole chain can underwrite, manage and sell credit on one platform.
Starting capital:US$17M Series A (2021) with Syngenta, Minerva, Serasa, Astella, SP Ventures and Tiger Global; US$10M pre-Series B led by BASF Venture Capital (2022); US$20M round with Banco do Brasil (2024)
How it started
Fabricio (ex-Credit Suisse) and Aline Pezente sketched the idea at MIT in 2017 after seeing Brazilian farmers struggle for credit to buy seeds and fertilizer. Banks found risk assessment slow — Aline told AFP it took three months per calculation — so Traive built AI models that score 2,500+ data points, with methodology reviewed by an ACM technical board.
What happened
Launched with clients including Syngenta and fintechs; raised a US$17M Series A in 2021 (Tiger Global among investors), a US$10M pre-Series B led by BASF Venture Capital in October 2022, and a US$20M round with Banco do Brasil in February 2024 via the BB Impacto ASG fund. By April 2024 AFP reported 70,000+ farmers and ~US$1B in credit facilitated.
How it ended up
Still scaling: in 2025 Traive entered Mexico and Colombia and launched a rural-credit marketplace connecting investment funds with input distributors, expecting to intermediate at least R$2B during 2025 after R$1B in 2024 (Estadão, May 2025).
Background
Traive is a Brazilian agri-credit platform whose core product is AI risk assessment: models trained on 2,500+ data points score farm-loan portfolios in real time, and the platform lets ag-input companies, distributors, cooperatives and banks underwrite, manage and sell credit on one system. Its founding claim, per AFP, is that what took banks three months can now be computed in about five minutes with more accuracy.
The company began at MIT in 2017, where Fabricio Pezente (ex-Credit Suisse) and Aline Oliveira Pezente, an agri-industry veteran who studied AI and data analysis there, started sketching how to connect credit supply with farmers who need it. Aline told AFP that Brazilian banks were reluctant to lend because evaluating natural and financial risks — drought, floods, commodity price swings — was painfully manual, so Traive digitized that analysis and got the methodology reviewed by an ACM technical board.
Traction followed in layers: a US$17M Series A in 2021 with Syngenta, Minerva, Serasa, Astella, SP Ventures and Tiger Global; a US$10M pre-Series B led by BASF Venture Capital in October 2022; and a US$20M round with Banco do Brasil in February 2024. By April 2024 AFP reported 70,000+ farmers using the platform and nearly US$1B in credit facilitated, and in May 2025 Estadão reported a new rural-credit marketplace with a target of intermediating at least R$2B that year.
What has to be true
- The bet is precise: if AI scoring is credible, agri credit no longer needs collateral-heavy manual underwriting, and the whole input chain can fund itself.
- Traction is quantified: 70,000+ farmers and ~US$1B in credit facilitated, reported by AFP on 2024-04-21.
- The investor list shows the thesis in action: Banco do Brasil, Syngenta, BASF and Tiger Global all chose to back the risk engine rather than build their own.
- The outcome is still unfolding: the 2025 marketplace launch moves Traive from software to intermediary, a bigger bet on its own models.
What can be applied
Sell the risk model, not the loan: by making underwriting the product, Traive turned banks, input giants and capital markets into customers and investors instead of competitors.
Aftermath
As of May 2025 Traive is operating in Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. Estadão reported on 2025-05-03 that the company had launched a rural-credit marketplace connecting investment funds with input distributors, starting with ten distributors and seven financial agents, and expected to intermediate at least R$2B in 2025 on top of R$1B in 2024, working with 60 distribution groups in Brazil. No revenue or profitability figures have been disclosed.
