What the business is
Insurance startup planning home insurance, auto insurance and a home warranty sold through agents, underwritten via a carrier partner as an MGA.
The bet
That centering agents — with better tools and incentive models — beats the consumer-direct insurtech playbook for middle-income to affluent families buying homes.
Starting capital
$5.25 million seed (July 2022), led by Lerer Hippeau Ventures.
How it started
Philip Krim stepped down as Casper CEO in 2021 and spent his time investing and incubating via Montauk Ventures. With Greg Garrison (15 years at AIG) and Gabriel Flateman he co-founded Ranger to elevate agents rather than replace them — a deliberate contrast with Lemonade- and Hippo-style consumer apps and Goodcover's transparency play.
What happened
On 7 July 2022 Ranger announced the $5.25 million seed and a plan to launch in the fall, offering home insurance, auto insurance and a home-warranty policy in Arizona, Indiana and Ohio. As an MGA it would not carry the risk itself, partnering with a carrier for its own policies.
What has to be true
New-wave platforms courted the end-consumer; as far as TechCrunch could tell none had focused on agents' tooling — Ranger claims that gap.
The MGA structure lets a seed-stage startup sell its own policies without carrying underwriting risk.
Unknowing underinsurance of about $100,000 per home is a concrete pain that agent-led advice can surface and app-based purchase flows skip.
The co-founders frame the $500 billion market as split between ultra-wealthy hand-holding and everyone else 'buying a policy and hoping for the best' — the middle is the target.
What can be applied
When startups all go direct-to-consumer, the neglected channel — the local agent — can be the wedge, if you make that channel faster and better paid instead of replacing it.
Aftermath
As of the 7 July 2022 announcement, Ranger planned a fall launch in Arizona, Indiana and Ohio with home insurance, auto insurance and a home-warranty policy, targeting middle-income to affluent home buyers the co-founders said the market had taught to treat insurance as a commodity.
