What the business is
Rei do Pitaco is a Brazilian daily fantasy sports app (Cartola-style football lineups with cash prizes) that since January 2025 also operates a fully licensed online sportsbook and iGaming platform built entirely in-house.
The bet
That legalization would open a licensed market where a clean-record fantasy app could win an early license and become a trusted sportsbook.
Starting capital
R$28M seed in 2021, then an R$180M Series A in Jan 2022 led by D1 Capital Partners with Kaszek, Bullpen Capital, Left Lane, DST Global partners and Globo Ventures — the largest round ever raised by a Brazilian startup in the segment at the time
How it started
Founded in 2019 by Kiko Augusto and Mateus Dantas, both with Facebook/Google/Intel backgrounds, Rei do Pitaco grew as a fantasy-football game where users build lineups from real leagues and win prizes. It raised a R$28M seed in 2021, then an R$180M Series A in Jan 2022 led by D1 Capital Partners, and migrated into sports betting in 2022 through a multi-year platform deal with Kambi.
What happened
On Dec 29 2023 Brazil's president signed Lei 14.790, finally regulating fixed-odds betting and online gaming under the Finance Ministry's Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA), with a Jan 1 2025 market launch. Rei do Pitaco submitted its license application on Jul 19 2024 — the third operator to do so within the 90-day priority window — and in January 2025 was one of only 14 companies out of 114 applicants to receive a definitive license, while 52 others got provisional ones. Its in-house sportsbook and iGaming platform went live at the start of January 2025. In Oct 2025 it secured US$18M in non-dilutive user-acquisition financing from PvX Partners to scale marketing and user growth.
How it ended up
Still running and expanding: a fully licensed sportsbook, fantasy and casino platform, fresh growth capital, and 2025 partnerships with Genius Sports and DATA.BET — one of the few cases where betting legalization turned a startup's regulatory bet into a moat rather than a trap.
What has to be true
Five unregulated years meant most rivals operated offshore; Rei do Pitaco's choice to stay fantasy-only left it clean when SPA licensing opened.
Applying inside the 90-day priority window and building its own platform in-house let a 2019 startup beat global giants to one of only 14 definitive licenses.
The law's fixed 12% GGR tax and license fee made licensed scale the strategy, not gray-market arbitrage.
Non-dilutive growth financing after the license shows investors priced regulatory compliance as an asset, not a cost.
What can be applied
When a gray market gets legalized, a clean regulatory record becomes a moat: the operators that stayed legal won the licenses while offshore rivals carried back-tax liabilities into the new regime.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-02 Rei do Pitaco is live and scaling: a fully licensed sportsbook, casino and fantasy platform, backed by the Oct 2025 US$18M PvX Partners financing and 2025 supply deals with Genius Sports and DATA.BET. It competes with licensed global operators like Betano and Betsson under a 12% GGR tax plus a consumption 'sin tax' from 2026, which its executives warn could push players back to the black market if set too high. The test ahead is whether a compliance-first local brand can outgrow much larger rivals.
