What the business is
Ruuky was a Hamburg neobank offering Gen Z a social, interactive first bank account
The bet
That Gen Z would choose a social, interactive, educational banking app built for them — even as regulation and deposits made the model capital-hungry
Starting capital
€4M raised in late November 2021, led by Cavalry Ventures with Vorwerk Ventures participating
How it started
Founded around 2020 in Hamburg and also known as pockid, Ruuky built a 'social interactive banking app' for Gen Z, evolving the product together with its community and positioning itself as a first mover in youth banking.
What happened
In late November 2021 it raised €4 million led by Cavalry Ventures with Vorwerk Ventures; investor Martin Janicki said the team speaks Gen Z's language 'like no other provider on the market'. The company reported a great 2022, with organic growth and strong watch time on Gen Z social channels.
How it ended up
In early January 2023 Ruuky began insolvency proceedings, unable to raise new capital 'in the current market environment'. New account openings were suspended and customers informed; existing deposits and app access were unaffected. The proceedings were designed to preserve the 20-member team's jobs while the company kept seeking funding.
What has to be true
Teen banking wins trust slowly but burns capital fast — licences, deposits and support cost more than a social app's revenue covers.
The 2022-23 funding winter hit consumer fintech hardest, and a €4M seed could not carry a regulated product to sustainability.
First-account loyalty is real but monetizes years later; the model needed investors patient enough for customers to grow up.
Community love and social reach, the metrics Ruuky led with, do not substitute for a path to breakeven in neobanking.
What can be applied
A community product that wins love can still die in a funding winter — consumer banking needs runway measured in years, not quarters.
Aftermath
As of 9 January 2023 Ruuky was in insolvency proceedings intended to preserve the 20-person team while it sought funding; new accounts were suspended, deposits and app access unaffected. How long that could continue was, as Tech.eu wrote, 'remains to be seen'.
