Group-wide financial superapp bundling four Samsung affiliates' services under the Samsung Financial Networks brand.

Koreans would consolidate their Samsung insurance, securities and card services in one app — if it could do what Toss does with MyData analytics.

Launched in April 2022 by Samsung Life Insurance, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, Samsung Securities and Samsung Card under the Samsung Financial Networks brand, Monimo was expected to threaten Korea's biggest financial apps.

Samsung Card couldn't obtain the MyData licence the app's personalisation depended on: an FSC institutional warning over Samsung Life in January 2022 barred both companies from new business for a year. The app sat at ~2.2M MAU with dismal ratings, and industry insiders blamed the absence of a control tower across four affiliates — which Samsung Card disputed, citing an executive committee. In June 2023, about two months after a preliminary licence, the FSC approved Samsung Card's MyData business.

The app's core personalisation depended on a licence its largest affiliate's regulatory troubles blocked for a year.

Four equals governance risk: even a committee structure didn't produce the single-owner urgency rivals had.

Early movers Toss and Kakao Bank had years of MyData-driven customisation head start in a regulation-constrained market.

A 25-million-customer base is an addressable market, not a user base — no one had a reason to consolidate inside Monimo.

A conglomerate superapp is only as strong as its regulatory footing and its governance: 25 million customers don't transfer without a reason to switch.

Samsung Card promised Monimo and its own app would now offer personalised benefits and wider services with MyData approved; Samsung Pay integration remained undiscussed, and insiders doubted the app could stand out in a saturated market.
