How it started

Typeset was ideated in late 2014 and launched publicly in mid-2017 by Saikiran Chandha and Shanu Kumar in Bengaluru, targeting the fragmented academic-writing workflow: four or five separate tools and about 20 steps to submit a paper. What happened

The company rebranded to SciSpace and grew into an AI research platform with a 200M+ paper corpus, 100,000+ journal templates and, per partner materials, over 1 million researchers in 100+ countries. In August 2025 it launched the general-purpose SciSpace Agent; the team then concluded that biomedical work needed deeper specialization — paywalled literature, disconnected omics and clinical datasets, and discipline-specific tools. On December 8 2025 it launched BioMed Agent, an AI co-scientist that chains 150+ biomedical software/tools and curated databases through one prompt, handling variant interpretation, single-cell and multi-omics analysis, CRISPR/cloning design and experimental workflows. It finished #3 on Product Hunt's daily leaderboard with 410 votes, and the founder posted on IndieHackers the same day asking the community whether an integrated AI co-scientist solved a real pain point.

SciSpace BioMed Agent is an AI co-scientist for biomedical research, launched December 8 2025 by SciSpace, the platform formerly known as Typeset. Its pitch is that biomedical researchers still juggle ten or more disconnected tools for one analysis — literature search in one place, pathway tools elsewhere, variant interpretation on another site — so it chains more than 150 biomedical software tools and curated databases behind a single prompt.

SciSpace began in 2014-17 as Typeset, a Bengaluru writing and auto-formatting platform for academic papers, backed by an $850K pre-Series A in 2017.
