SciSpace BioMed Agent: research copilot bets domain agents beat ChatGPT

SciSpace is an AI research platform (formerly Typeset) that hosts 200M+ papers for search, reading, writing and formatting; BioMed Agent is a specialized add-on that runs biomedical workflows — variant interpretation, omics analysis, cloning/CRISPR design, drug discovery — from a single prompt.

That biomedicine needs domain-native agents, not general chatbots: grounded in curated databases, an AI can automate real workflows without hallucinated sources.

Pre-Series A of $850K in Sept 2017 from Haresh Chawla, who had already invested personally since 2015 (Inc42).

Typeset was ideated in late 2014 and launched publicly in mid-2017 by Saikiran Chandha and Shanu Kumar in Bengaluru, targeting the fragmented academic-writing workflow: four or five separate tools and about 20 steps to submit a paper. It raised $850K in pre-Series A funding in September 2017 from Haresh Chawla, and within three months of launch reported more than 11,000 researchers across 103 countries using the platform, including users at CERN, NASA, ETH Zurich, Stanford and MIT.

The company rebranded to SciSpace and grew into an AI research platform with a 200M+ paper corpus, 100,000+ journal templates and, per partner materials, over 1 million researchers in 100+ countries. In August 2025 it launched the general-purpose SciSpace Agent; the team then concluded that biomedical work needed deeper specialization — paywalled literature, disconnected omics and clinical datasets, and discipline-specific tools. On December 8 2025 it launched BioMed Agent, an AI co-scientist that chains 150+ biomedical software/tools and curated databases through one prompt, handling variant interpretation, single-cell and multi-omics analysis, CRISPR/cloning design and experimental workflows. It finished #3 on Product Hunt's daily leaderboard with 410 votes, and the founder posted on IndieHackers the same day asking the community whether an integrated AI co-scientist solved a real pain point.

Still live and expanding as of 2026-09-02: BioMed Agent launched on schedule, ranked #3 on Product Hunt's daily board, and remains an add-on inside SciSpace's platform; no company-level end state such as shutdown, exit or dedicated funding round had been announced.

Fragmentation is the product pain: one analysis spans many tools and tabs, and BioMed Agent collapses that chain into a single prompt.

Grounding over general chat: curated databases and domain tools are meant to eliminate hallucinated references, which is existential in clinical and drug-discovery settings.

A corpus moat: 200M+ hosted papers and an existing researcher user base gave SciSpace distribution and data a new entrant would lack.

Vertical-first sequencing: it proved the general Agent first (Aug 2025), then specialized into biomedicine where risk — and willingness to pay — are highest.

A general assistant wins breadth; a domain agent wins trust. SciSpace grounded BioMed Agent in curated databases because in biomedicine a hallucinated citation is a liability, not a bug.

As of 2026-09-02 BioMed Agent is live as an add-on within SciSpace's research platform; the company continues operating its broader suite (paper discovery, Copilot reading assistance, writing and formatting tools) with claimed scale of 200M+ hosted papers and 1M+ researchers from 100+ countries per its Turnitin partner page. SciSpace's own launch materials describe BioMed Agent as coexisting with the general Agent rather than replacing it. Adoption, revenue and pricing specifics for the BioMed Agent itself had not been disclosed as of the as-of date, and no shutdown or exit had been announced.
