Setlog bets hourly 2-second clips revive friend social; 2M downloads in May

Tiny Korean startup New Chat Inc. relaunches anti-Instagram sharing: hourly raw clips auto-stitched into group vlogs; App Store #1, 2M+ downloads in May 2026.

Setlog (New Chat Inc. / 뉴챗)

The betThat friend-sharing demand outlived BeReal: hourly raw clips auto-stitched into shared vlogs give small groups the moment and the memory, without BeReal's pressure.Scaling

What the business is

A close-friend social app: users in invite-only groups (up to 12 people) shoot 2–3 second videos on hourly reminders; at day's end the app auto-stitches the group's clips into a shareable split-screen vlog.

How it started

New Chat Inc., an early-stage startup led by US engineer Devin Doty (8.5 years at Snap), launched Setlog for iPhone in December 2025 (per Korean press), targeting Korea first, then Japan and Taiwan. The name combines Korean 'set' (three) and 'log' — groups began at three people and expanded to 12 in April 2026.

What happened

Growth was organic and steep: #1 on Korea's App Store social-networking chart on April 3, 2026, and also #1 in Taiwan and Hong Kong; Naver search volume for Setlog (셋로그) jumped about 10x in a week (Apr 20–27 vs Mar 30–Apr 5); the Android beta arriving April 23 passed 500K cumulative downloads in five days; AppMagic measured 1.8M+ downloads in the trailing 30 days as of May 6. K-pop acts Seventeen and Karina (Aespa) posted Setlog vlogs — Seventeen's 11th-anniversary group video drew 8.3M Instagram views — and Appfigures counted 2M+ downloads in May. On June 1 the app sat #3 on Korea's App Store, ahead of Google Gemini and Anthropic's Claude.

How it ended up

Still growing and free as of June 2026 with no ads or monetization; the open questions are privacy concerns from hourly location and routine recording, peer pressure from blank time slots, and whether the habit and business model outlast the hype — the cliff BeReal hit.

Background

Setlog is a close-friend social app from New Chat Inc., an early-stage startup led by Devin Doty, a US engineer who spent 8.5 years at Snap. It relaunches the anti-Instagram idea BeReal popularized: users in invite-only groups of up to 12 record 2–3 second videos when the app pings them each hour, and at day's end the clips are automatically stitched into a split-screen vlog of what everyone was doing at the same time.

The bet is that BeReal died from its mechanics, not its premise. BeReal's random daily notification, two-minute deadline and see-nothing-if-you-post-nothing penalty turned fun into pressure; Setlog removes the penalty entirely — skipped hours simply show blank slots labeled 'sleeping' — and adds a tool value BeReal never had: the auto-generated shared vlog, a keepsake that needs no editing and is made to be exported.

Distribution was organic: no ad campaigns are traceable. Setlog hit #1 on Korea's App Store social-networking chart on April 3, 2026, then Taiwan and Hong Kong; the Android beta released April 23 passed 500K cumulative downloads in five days, and AppMagic counted 1.8M+ downloads in the trailing 30 days by May 6. K-pop's Seventeen (all nine active members) and Aespa's Karina posted Setlog vlogs, and Appfigures recorded 2M+ downloads in May 2026; on June 1 Setlog was Korea's #3 app on the App Store, ahead of Google Gemini and Claude.

The company is still pre-revenue with no monetization, and critics note the privacy cost of recording one's location and routine every hour, plus the peer pressure blank slots can create. Whether Setlog becomes a durable platform or a BeReal-style flash depends on habit formation and a business model — both unproven as of June 2026.

What has to be true

  • The need outlived the product: BeReal's 50M+ peak users proved demand for unfiltered friend-sharing, and Setlog's design answers each reason people deleted BeReal.
  • Tool value is embedded in the social loop: the auto-stitched vlog is an output users want to keep and export, driving retention beyond the daily prompt.
  • Zero-buying growth: with no traceable ad spend, K-pop posts, X views and Instagram hashtags did the distribution, keeping CAC effectively zero.
  • Timing matches platform fatigue: in Korea and Japan, where social anxiety and Instagram polish fatigue run high, invite-only small circles feel like a safer space.

What can be applied

A dead category can come back if you fix the mechanism, not the need: BeReal proved demand for raw friend-sharing, and Setlog kept the need while removing the pressure and the editing barrier.

Aftermath

As of 2026-06-03 Setlog is free, ad-free and pre-revenue, riding word-of-mouth across Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, with an early-stage team led from the US by Devin Doty. The company faces the BeReal precedent of viral-then-fade, privacy criticism over hourly life-logging, and the unanswered question of monetization at scale.
