Skyvern's vision-LLM browser bet: #1 on HN, 3k stars, then $2.7M

Skyvern bet vision-LLMs reading screenshots would replace brittle DOM scripts; the repo hit 3k stars in a day, #1 GitHub trending, then a $2.7M seed.

Skyvern AI Inc.

The betAutomation shouldn't whack-a-mole the DOM: a vision-LLM that sees the page like a human would survive redesigns, and open source plus a paid cloud would spread it.Scaling

What the business is

Skyvern automates browser-based workflows with LLMs and computer vision: it screenshots a page, a vision-LLM finds the element that looks like the checkout button or form field, and acts on it — no XPath, no pre-written selectors. It ships as an open-source API, a Playwright-compatible SDK, a no-code workflow builder, and Skyvern Cloud.

Starting capital$2.7M seed announced in Dec 2025 to fund a compile-to-code engine (Skyvern blog); the company was part of YC's S23 batch; earlier rounds were not disclosed.

How it started

In 2023 Suchintan Singh, Kerem Yilmaz and Shuchang Zheng, then in YC's S23 batch, first built Wyvern, a browser-automation tool whose HN launch fell flat with 10 upvotes and never left the 'newest' filter. They rebuilt as Skyvern — an API that lets companies automate back-office browser work in natural language — and open-sourced it in March 2024.

What happened

The 2024-03-14 Show HN spent hours at #1 on Hacker News: 420 points, 138 comments, and the after-stats were 3,000 GitHub stars, 71 booked meetings, 39 Cloud waitlist emails and 1,298 workflows run by open-source users, plus coverage in 30+ AI newsletters. In October the Skyvern Cloud launch repeated the trick, going 6K to 9K stars in four days and taking #1 on GitHub trending daily and weekly. Through 2025 the team added a Playwright-compatible SDK, the Planner/Actor/Validator architecture, and Web Bench, a benchmark of 5,750 tasks across the top 1,000 websites focused on complex write actions.

How it ended up

In Dec 2025 Skyvern announced a $2.7M seed to build 'Route Memorization': let the AI figure out a path once, compile it into a fast, cheap Playwright script, and wake the AI to heal the path when the site changes. The repo remains open source under AGPL-3.0 and reached ~23k stars by Aug 2026.

Background

Skyvern automates browser-based workflows using LLMs and computer vision. Where traditional tools find elements by XPath or CSS selectors, Skyvern screenshots the page and lets a vision-LLM find the thing that looks like the checkout button or the email field, then acts on it — which means redesigns that keep the UI looking the same never break its flows.

The company came out of YC's S23 batch. In 2023 the founders had open-sourced an earlier product, Wyvern, whose Hacker News launch fell flat with 10 upvotes; Skyvern's March 2024 Show HN was the opposite — a few hours at #1, 420 points, 138 comments, and 3,000 GitHub stars, 71 inbound meetings, 39 Cloud waitlist emails and 1,298 workflows executed by open-source users by the end of the day.

October 2024's Skyvern Cloud launch repeated the pattern: 6,000 to 9,000 stars in four days and #1 on GitHub trending both daily and weekly, per the company. Through 2025 Skyvern added a Playwright-compatible SDK, a Planner/Actor/Validator architecture for complex tasks, and Web Bench, a benchmark of 5,750 tasks across the top 1,000 websites focused on write actions like forms, logins and downloads.

In December 2025 Skyvern announced a $2.7M seed round to build Route Memorization: the AI works out a successful path once, that path is compiled into a fast, cheap Playwright script, and the AI wakes up only to 'heal' the script when a site changes. The repository stays open source under AGPL-3.0 and stood at roughly 23k stars by August 2026.

What has to be true

  • The bet was falsifiable: selectors break every frontend deploy, while a screenshot-based agent only breaks when the UI visually changes — a strictly more durable target.
  • Open source was the distribution engine: the #1 HN launch and GitHub trending did the marketing, converting 3k-star bursts into meetings, waitlist signups and customers.
  • The compile-to-code endgame attacked the real unit economics — an LLM call per interaction is too slow and expensive for high-volume scraping, so memorizing routes cuts cost per run.
  • It picked a boring, expensive market — vendor portals, invoices, government forms — where 'maintenance tax' is a board-level pain and willingness to pay is high.

What can be applied

Every launch compounds in open source: a #1 Show HN bought 3,000 stars, 71 meetings and a waitlist in one day, then each relaunch multiplied distribution until a small team raised a seed on momentum.

Aftermath

As of 2026-09-02 Skyvern is a small, funded open-source company: the repo stands at ~23k stars (22.2k on the 2026-07-12 whatstrending snapshot), and the Dec 2025 $2.7M seed funds Route Memorization — compiling successful AI paths into cheap Playwright scripts that self-heal when sites change. The space is crowded — Browser Use, Firecrawl and Crawl4AI grew or raised on adjacent web-agent infrastructure — so Skyvern differentiates on visual write-action reliability for authenticated portals, benchmarked on its own Web Bench of 5,750 tasks across the top 1,000 websites.
