SocialAI: the bot-only social network where everyone but you is AI

SocialAI is an iOS app that looks like Twitter but has no other humans: every follower is an AI bot, and every post instantly receives AI-generated replies, likes and comment threads in a private feed.

That the familiar social feed — not the chat window — is the right interface for LLMs: a private network where you are the only human and millions of AI followers answer.

Friendly Apps raised a $3M seed in May 2022 before building any product (TechCrunch); SocialAI itself launched free with no in-app purchases, and Sayman said he would not raise more until finding product-market fit.

Sayman, a 28-year-old New York developer who coded apps as a teenager in Miami during the financial crisis and later held product roles at Facebook, Google and Roblox, had wanted to build a private AI network for years. He told The Verge that about a month before launch he decided LLMs had finally become good and cheap enough, and got to work under his venture-backed studio Friendly Apps, whose earlier apps were AI Hits and Cosmic.

SocialAI launched late Monday, September 16, 2024 as a free app: sign up, pick your bot audience — supporters, trolls, critics, doomers and more — and post. Replies came instantly, every follower was transparently code, and the premise exploded into a worldwide debate: art project, dystopia, or commentary on bot-filled X. Wired's review found the bots' 'responses lacked nutrients or human messiness'; NY Mag called it too boring to use even when trying to mess with it. Sayman countered that a broadcast model of LLM interaction is the future interface, and joked everyone could now feel like Elon Musk after buying Twitter 'without spending $44 billion.' Wired noted he was a team of one relying mostly on OpenAI's models, rate-limiting the app so API fees would not bankrupt him, with no monetization plan and no published privacy guidelines — posts were subject to OpenAI's data-training terms.

No later outcome has been published: after the launch-week virality, SocialAI stayed a free, single-developer app with no announced monetization, and no updated user counts have been made public.

The premise was self-demonstrating: installing an app where every follower is AI is itself an argument about the state of social media, so screenshots and posts spread it for free.

The contrast was sharp and quotable: Sayman set the broadcast feed against ChatGPT's one-to-one chat window, a familiar interface debate anyone could join.

It shipped fast as a usable MVP with a strong emotional pitch — 'feel heard,' a 'magical diary' — that every reviewer could test in minutes.

Free with no paywall lowered the barrier to trying it, and the absence of marketing spend made the virality look even more remarkable.

Unresolved questions — privacy terms, OpenAI API costs, monetization — kept tech media reporting on it for weeks after launch.

A debatable premise is free distribution: SocialAI spread because everyone could argue about it — but buzz alone is not a business, and a one-person free app had no plan to convert it.

As of 2026-09-02, SocialAI is still listed as a free app: a third-party App Store snapshot shows 347 ratings at 4.2 stars, and the listing still promises '1M+ AI followers.' The last concrete traction figure remains The Verge's launch-week report of 20,000 downloads in the first couple of days, with Sayman saying the number had 'gone up substantially since.' No later user counts, funding or monetization have been announced, so the case stands as a launch-week phenomenon whose viral premise outran its business model.
