How it started

Board chairman Michael Thomas had tinkered with sound-based firefighting and, stuck, cold-contacted Geoff Bruder — a NASA engineer focused on heat and acoustics — through LinkedIn. Bruder built a prototype from a subwoofer and parts from Home Depot and AutoZone, and knocked a fire out from seven feet in his driveway. The startup then abandoned loudspeaker designs and dropped to about 20 Hz infrasound from a reciprocating piston, below the hearing range, so suppression could be powerful yet safe; TechCrunch exclusively reported the $3.5M seed from Khosla Ventures and Third Sphere on October 14, 2025.

What happened

In August 2026 Sonic Fire Tech closed additional funding led by The O.H.I.O. Fund with Khosla reinvesting and Third Sphere and AirAngels continuing, bringing the seed to $15M. The money funds hiring in Cleveland, near NASA's Glenn Research Center, and the testing needed for National Fire Protection Association certification — a process that typically takes about three years. The company is testing kitchen and home systems, has found its infrasound contains rather than extinguishes lithium-ion battery fires, is working with PG&E and Southern California Edison on utility equipment, holds a letter of intent with a chemical storage facility, and is in talks with insurers about premium discounts; its wildfire exterior-home system is moving more slowly while it waits for time at a suitable testing lab.

Fund, with Khosla doubling down and Third Sphere and AirAngels continuing) and is spending on U.S.-based manufacturing, an install-partner network, and certification work in Cleveland near NASA Glenn. Field validation with the Fire Service and California residential pilots are under way, UL validation is in progress, and third-party engineers have established NFPA 13D equivalency. No broad commercial deployment or revenue is reported yet, and the company has not announced when approval may come.
