Founded in 2023 in Bengaluru by Vimal Singh Rathore (ex-head of growth at Unacademy, which acquired his earlier startup Coursavy) and Aseem Gupta, SuperKalam targeted the ~5M Indians who sit civil-services tests each year but can't afford private coaching. Picking one exam (UPSC) created a focused product instead of a generic 'AI tutor', which made word-of-mouth and daily-use habits easy to measure.

Delivering over WhatsApp met students where they already were, removing app-download friction.

AI evaluating answers in 60 seconds attacked the exact bottleneck (personalized feedback) that offline coaching monetizes.

Charging only after building 60k users let the team prove willingness to pay before scaling spend.

Choose a market big enough to matter but narrow enough to automate: one exam, one painful job-to-be-done, and AI replaces the coach (not the content) — 2 humans can then serve lakhs of students.

As of Sep 2026 SuperKalam is live, with a ~20-person Bengaluru team per its YC page and 'Trusted by 200,000+ aspirants' on the Play Store. It keeps expanding within UPSC prep — test series, daily current affairs, AI answer evaluation — rather than diversifying into other exams, and remains bootstrapped apart from the $2M seed.
