SuperKalam's AI-mentor bet: two humans plus AI coach UPSC aspirants, 200k+ users

AI mentor for India's UPSC exam: 60-second answer evaluation and daily nudges via WhatsApp; 60k+ students by mid-2024, 200k+ aspirants by 2026, YC-backed.

SuperKalam (Shaktimaan AI)

The betThat an AI mentor with 60-second answer evaluation and daily nudges can replace lakh-rupee UPSC coaching and scale to India's ~5M civil-services aspirants.Live

What the business is

AI-powered personal mentor for UPSC civil-services preparation: 60-second Mains answer evaluation, PYQs/MCQs, daily current-affairs analysis and nudge-based study plans, delivered over WhatsApp and a desktop app.

Starting capital$2M seed (INR 16.6 Cr), May 2024, led by Y Combinator and Fundersclub with GoodWater Capital, Nurture Ventures, SuperCapital and Pareto Ventures.

How it started

Founded in 2023 in Bengaluru by Vimal Singh Rathore (ex-head of growth at Unacademy, which acquired his earlier startup Coursavy) and Aseem Gupta, SuperKalam targeted the ~5M Indians who sit civil-services tests each year but can't afford private coaching. Rathore's thesis: AI removes 'humans as a variable', making personalized mentorship infinitely scalable.

What happened

Part of Y Combinator's Winter 2023 batch, SuperKalam raised a $2M seed led by YC and Fundersclub in May 2024 with 60,000+ students. It began charging in June 2024 and kept growing registrations; CNBC-TV18 (Apr 2025) highlighted its model — two human educators plus AI — with Sparrow Capital saying burn was 'minuscule compared with our growth in metrics'.

How it ended up

Still live and growing: the Play Store listing shows 200,000+ aspirants as of Aug 2026, the YC page lists an active ~20-person Bengaluru team, and the product has expanded from UPSC prep into AI answer evaluation and structured test series.

Background

SuperKalam is an AI-powered personal mentor for UPSC civil-services aspirants: it evaluates Mains answers in 60 seconds, generates study plans and daily targets, resolves doubts and delivers current-affairs analysis, all over WhatsApp and a desktop app. Its bet was that AI can replicate the most valuable — and most expensive — part of coaching: the mentor who keeps you consistent.

Founded in 2023 by Vimal Singh Rathore and Aseem Gupta, the Bengaluru startup joined Y Combinator's Winter 2023 batch and raised a $2M seed led by YC and Fundersclub in May 2024, by which point it claimed 60,000+ students. It started charging in June 2024, and CNBC-TV18 (Apr 2025) profiled the model: two human educators plus AI serving a market of ~5M annual aspirants, with investors calling the burn minuscule relative to growth.

By mid-2026 the Google Play listing showed 200,000+ aspirants. The company argues that by removing humans from doubt resolution, evaluation and content creation, learning becomes infinitely scalable — a direct challenge to the classroom-coaching economics that made UPSC prep a lakh-rupee business.

What has to be true

  • Picking one exam (UPSC) created a focused product instead of a generic 'AI tutor', which made word-of-mouth and daily-use habits easy to measure.
  • Delivering over WhatsApp met students where they already were, removing app-download friction.
  • AI evaluating answers in 60 seconds attacked the exact bottleneck (personalized feedback) that offline coaching monetizes.
  • Charging only after building 60k users let the team prove willingness to pay before scaling spend.

What can be applied

Choose a market big enough to matter but narrow enough to automate: one exam, one painful job-to-be-done, and AI replaces the coach (not the content) — 2 humans can then serve lakhs of students.

Aftermath

As of Sep 2026 SuperKalam is live, with a ~20-person Bengaluru team per its YC page and 'Trusted by 200,000+ aspirants' on the Play Store. It keeps expanding within UPSC prep — test series, daily current affairs, AI answer evaluation — rather than diversifying into other exams, and remains bootstrapped apart from the $2M seed.
