BoldVoice is a subscription accent-coaching app for non-native English speakers: proprietary speech models score pronunciation phoneme by phoneme while video lessons from Hollywood dialect coaches teach the fix, priced around $150 a year.

That speech AI plus recorded Hollywood-coach lessons could turn $200-an-hour accent coaching into a $150-a-year app for a billion non-native speakers.

$21M Series A led by Matrix (announced 2026-01), with Flybridge, Xfund, Corazon Capital, Alumni Ventures, Umami Capital and Y Combinator; earlier YC-backed pre-seed in 2021.

Anada Lakra, an immigrant from Albania who moved to the US for college, watched international classmates at Harvard Business School struggle to speak up in class and in interviews despite strong English, and knew the feeling firsthand: accent shapes how listeners judge competence. With co-founder and CTO Ilya Usorov, whose immigrant parents had faced the same career ceiling, she took the idea through Y Combinator in 2021, recruited Hollywood accent coach Ron Carlos, and shipped a bare-bones first version. Early users came from guerrilla outreach in Reddit accent communities such as 'Judge My Accent' and from Facebook groups, before YouTube influencers took over as the main channel.

BoldVoice compounded quietly through 2021–2025, climbing to the top of its app-store category on word of mouth among professionals. The product combined real-time phoneme-level AI feedback with video lessons from named Hollywood dialect coaches and curricula adapted to a learner's native language; switching to annual-default pricing fixed unit economics. Lakra cited $1M ARR as the first real product-market-fit signal, and by early 2026 the company reported $10M+ annual recurring revenue with a small team, more than 5M downloads across 150+ countries, and a 4.8-star rating from 70,000+ reviews. In January 2026 Matrix led a $21M Series A.

Still independent and scaling. BoldVoice says the fresh capital will accelerate global expansion and new AI coaching capabilities and proprietary speech models; the company was hiring across growth, product and engineering as it pushes beyond accent work toward general communication coaching.

The founders were the market: both had immigrant experience of accent bias, so the pain point, the product vision and the customers' stakes were understood before any code existed.

Reddit gave them the first beachhead: communities like 'Judge My Accent' were already practicing the exact behavior BoldVoice automates, so early users were nearly free and deeply engaged.

The price wedge was structural: accent coaching cost $200–300 an hour, so a $150-a-year alternative with real coach content and instant AI feedback changed who could access the category at all.

The business model compounded: annual pricing, word-of-mouth professionals and a tiny team let BoldVoice reach $10M ARR before raising, so the Series A was a scaling decision, not survival.

Find the community already practicing the problem: r/JudgeMyAccent users solicited pronunciation feedback before the app existed, so the first thousand users cost nothing but authenticity.

As of 2026-09-06 BoldVoice remains independent and scaling under founders Anada Lakra and Ilya Usorov. After crossing $10M ARR and 5M downloads across 150+ countries, it raised a $21M Matrix-led Series A in January 2026 to fund global expansion and proprietary speech models trained on accented speech. The company frames its mission as removing accent bias rather than erasing accents, and is hiring across growth, product and engineering as it widens from pronunciation into communication coaching such as pacing and confidence.
