Sweep bets CSRD makes carbon data a must-buy; $100M raised, then rules slimmed
Parisian carbon platform Sweep raised ~$100M betting CSRD forced audit-ready reporting; the 2025 Omnibus trimmed scope, so it pivoted to data platform.
Sweep
What the business is
Sweep is a Paris-based sustainability data platform: enterprises collect carbon and ESG data across operations and supply chains, track targets, and produce audit-ready reports for CSRD, CDP, ISSB and California's SB 253.
Starting capital:About $100M total: $5M seed before beta, $22M Series A (Dec 2021), $73M Series B led by Coatue (Apr 2022) with Balderton, New Wave, La Famiglia and 2050.
How it started
Delacour and Nicolas Raspal founded Sweep in Paris in 2020, raised $5M before launching a beta, and launched commercially in April 2021 with a platform that visualized carbon across a company's locations, suppliers and products.
What happened
Sweep raised a $22M Series A in December 2021 and a $73M Series B led by Coatue in April 2022, becoming Europe's best-funded carbon platform. The EU adopted CSRD in late 2022, with first-wave reports due in 2025. When the European Commission's February 2025 Omnibus proposal raised CSRD thresholds and cut many companies out of scope, Sweep publicly welcomed the simplification and repositioned itself as a sustainability data management platform; by September 2025 it cited clients including Crocs, CH Robinson and L'Oréal.
How it ended up
Still running and repositioned: Sweep now sells AI-assisted sustainability data management, was named a Leader in IDC MarketScape 2026 and the Verdantix 2026 Green Quadrant, and announced a HowGood data partnership in June 2026.
Background
Sweep is a Paris-based startup that bet the EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive would turn carbon data into a corporate must-buy. Co-founded by Rachel Delacour and Nicolas Raspal in 2020 — Delacour had sold her previous company BIME Analytics to Zendesk — it launched in April 2021 with software for tracking Scope 1–3 emissions across a company's sites and suppliers.
The bet attracted capital fast: $5M seed, a $22M Series A in December 2021, and a $73M Series B led by Coatue in April 2022, which Sifted called making Sweep Europe's best-funded carbon platform. The timing was the story: CSRD was adopted in late 2022 and the first wave of companies had to report for fiscal 2024, making audit-ready sustainability reporting a pressing procurement need.
Then the regulation moved. In February 2025 the European Commission's Omnibus proposal raised CSRD thresholds, removing most companies from scope. Sweep publicly welcomed the simplification, arguing reporting remains a strategic advantage, and repositioned from a compliance product to an AI-assisted sustainability data platform serving US and European enterprises such as Crocs, CH Robinson and L'Oréal.
By September 2026 Sweep is running as a scaled platform: named a Leader in IDC MarketScape 2026 and the Verdantix 2026 Green Quadrant for enterprise carbon management, and partnering with HowGood to connect product-level emissions data for food companies.
What has to be true
- The founders aimed at a timing wedge: large corporates had made public net-zero commitments but had no tooling, and CSRD was about to force them to report.
- Investors read the same regulatory signal, letting Sweep raise ~$100M before the first CSRD reports were due.
- When the Omnibus shrank the mandate, Sweep treated it as a repositioning prompt rather than a threat, pivoting to data platform value beyond compliance.
- Broadening from carbon accounting to all sustainability data kept the platform relevant as CSRD, ISSB and SB 253 created a multi-standard reporting world.
What can be applied
A mandate's first wave is the funding moment, but scope can shrink: the durable asset was the data platform, so Sweep pivoted from compliance tool to data infrastructure when CSRD coverage was cut.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-02 Sweep is still running, repositioned as an AI-assisted sustainability data management platform. It reports enterprise customers including L'Oréal, Crocs, CH Robinson, Thales and Accenture, was named a Leader in IDC MarketScape 2026 and the Verdantix 2026 Green Quadrant, and in June 2026 announced a HowGood partnership for food-industry reporting. The February 2025 EU Omnibus narrowed CSRD's mandatory scope; Sweep's response was to sell reporting as strategy and data infrastructure rather than pure compliance.
