How it started
Pete Roos co-founded Bridger Photonics in 2006 with Montana State University colleagues. The company spent over a decade on LiDAR R&D, launched Gas Mapping LiDAR commercially in 2019, and signed clients including ExxonMobil, SoCalGas, Devon, Cenovus and Chesapeake for voluntary emissions programs.

In September 2022 Montana's Beaverhead Partners put $55M into the company. As EPA finalized its methane rule (published March 8, 2024; effective May 7, 2024), Bridger submitted its GML method for approval under all detection tiers and said it expected to be the only remote-sensing technology approved in year one; EPA approval followed, confirmed in early 2025. In 2024 Bridger doubled its customer base, served 9 of the top 10 US natural gas producers, scanned more than 200,000 facilities and 200,000 miles of pipeline, and exceeded its revenue target.

Still running and scaling: founder Pete Roos became Chief Innovation Officer and Ben Little took over as CEO on February 18, 2025; growth continued as states began writing OOOOc plans for existing wells.
Background
Bridger Photonics is a Bozeman, Montana company that mounts laser sensors on small aircraft to find and quantify methane leaks across the US natural gas value chain. Founded in 2006, it spent more than a decade on LiDAR development before launching Gas Mapping LiDAR (GML) as a commercial service in 2019, selling aerial surveys to major producers and utilities for voluntary emissions programs.
Its bet was regulatory: if EPA forced oil and gas operators to find leaks on a schedule, aerial detection would become a compliance category instead of a nice-to-have. That happened on May 7, 2024, when EPA's final methane rule (OOOOb/c, published March 8, 2024) took effect — the first time the agency allowed approved advanced remote-sensing technologies to replace ground-based leak surveys. Bridger had submitted its GML method for approval and expected to be the only remote-sensing technology cleared in the first year; EPA approval was confirmed by early 2025.
The payoff followed: in 2024 Bridger doubled its customer base, served 9 of the top 10 US natural gas producers, scanned more than 200,000 facilities and 200,000 miles of pipeline, detected enough methane to power over 30 million homes for a year, and exceeded its revenue target. In late 2025 EPA extended several OOOOb/c compliance deadlines by 18 months, softening the regulatory pull, but the core demand — quantified, frequent leak detection — remained.

As of September 2026, Bridger remains a private, scaling company under CEO Ben Little (since February 2025), with founder Pete Roos as Chief Innovation Officer. Its GML method is EPA-approved for OOOOb compliance, and the company is expanding into pipeline and distribution surveys and new products. The November 2025 EPA final rule extended several 2024-rule compliance deadlines by 18 months, softening near-term demand, but did not undo the approval that made aerial detection a sanctioned compliance tool. Bridger continues to operate from Bozeman, scanning basins across North America.
