Sysadmin Casts bet bite-sized screencasts could teach what scattered docs couldn't

Sysadmin Casts is a free library of short, bite-sized Linux and Unix sysadmin screencasts with transcripts, video downloads, RSS and email notifications, produced by one working sysadmin in his spare time.

That short screencasts with transcripts would teach sysadmin skills more reliably than scattered HOWTOs, and a free library could later turn its audience into income.

WestCoastJustin, a sysadmin with 11+ years of experience who looked after high-performance computing infrastructure at a large company, wanted to build the screencast site he wished had existed when he was coming up. After producing five episodes he posted an Ask HN in June 2013 asking whether there was appetite for devops screencasts; tptacek advised him to collect email addresses, and he launched a weekly mailing list. Over the next year he recorded and edited episodes alone, using kazam for screen capture, Audacity for audio and kdenlive for editing.

The Show HN on 2014-07-09 drew 443 points and 80 comments praising the clear audio, well-cropped video, transcripts, downloads and RSS. Commenters repeatedly urged the maker to charge, citing RailsCasts-style subscriptions or a paid back catalog, while others warned that screencast businesses burn creators out. Justin said he wanted to keep the site free with sponsors or donations and was still exploring models; he confirmed the site ran on AWS S3 and CloudFront, serving 200+ concurrent viewers during the front-page spike for under $5, and that viewers from around the world were emailing him out of the blue.

Sysadmin education lagged behind programming content, so consistent, accurate basics plus transcript-backed screencasts filled a real gap.

Transcripts, downloads and RSS made each episode useful beyond the video itself and gave the site a searchable text layer.

Free access from day one built trust with skeptical sysadmins, who then asked to pay instead of being asked.

Starting with an Ask HN and taking advice on email lists turned a first audience into a channel that compounded over the next year.

For a one-person content business, giving away genuinely useful work builds the trust that later monetizes: viewers offered to pay before the maker had set a price.

As of 2014-07-09 Sysadmin Casts was a live free library of roughly 27 episodes produced by one person in his spare time, with transcripts, downloads, RSS and an email list. No business model had been chosen: the maker was weighing sponsors, donations and a paid back catalog while keeping his day job, and viewers had offered to pay for more regular episodes.
