WestCoastJustin, a sysadmin with 11+ years of experience who looked after high-performance computing infrastructure at a large company, wanted to build the screencast site he wished had existed when he was coming up. After producing five episodes he posted an Ask HN in June 2013 asking whether there was appetite for devops screencasts; tptacek advised him to collect email addresses, and he launched a weekly mailing list. Over the next year he recorded and edited episodes alone, using kazam for screen capture, Audacity for audio and kdenlive for editing.
