Telegram: 11 years without VC, then $1.4B revenue and first profit in 2024

Durov-funded messaging app turned its first annual profit in 2024: $540M on $1.4B revenue, with no venture capital.

What the business is

Free cloud messaging app for private chats, groups and channels, used by more than 950 million people a month; it makes money through advertising, a $5-a-month Premium tier and ecosystem partnerships.

Starting capitalDurov sold a $300M VKontakte stake in 2014 to fund Telegram's early years; the company later issued roughly $2.4B of bonds over four years instead of selling equity.

How it started

Pavel Durov co-founded Telegram in 2013 after leaving Russia, funding the app with the proceeds of his VKontakte stake. The bet was that a fast, private messenger with heavy encryption would win users worldwide if it stayed free and independent.

What happened

Telegram grew for nearly a decade with no sales team before switching on monetization: advertising on large channels and a Premium subscription launched in 2022. In December 2024 Durov said revenue had passed $1B for the year, with 12M Premium subscribers and more than $500M in cash reserves; an investor presentation later seen by the Financial Times put full-year revenue at $1.4B and net profit at $540M, against a $173M loss in 2023.

How it ended up

Profitable and independent as of May 2025: first annual profit, $1.4B of revenue, about $2.4B of bonds outstanding and an IPO still on the table when market conditions allow.

Background

Telegram was Pavel Durov's bet that a free, private messenger could win the world without giving away control. Founded in 2013 and funded by the $300M sale of his VKontakte stake, it grew through word of mouth while most rivals raised venture money. No VC meant no clock forcing growth tactics or an early exit.

Monetization came late. Telegram launched advertising on large channels and a Premium subscription in 2022, then added ecosystem partnerships. By December 2024 the app had over 950M monthly users and 12M paying Premium subscribers, and Durov announced revenue had surpassed $1B for the year with a first profit and more than $500M in cash reserves.

The audited picture was stronger still: an investor presentation seen by the Financial Times showed 2024 revenue of $1.4B, up from $343M in 2023, and a first net profit of $540M against a $173M loss the year before. Telegram expected 2025 revenue of $2B and profit of $720M, and kept an IPO open as a possibility.

What has to be true

  • Free first, monetize later: Telegram let usage compound for years before ads and Premium existed, betting that scale would make monetization easy when it arrived.
  • No equity investors: self-funding and bonds meant no venture clock demanding growth at any cost or a forced exit.
  • Distribution leverage: 950M users gave Telegram ad inventory and a Premium funnel that no new rival could match.
  • Late-arriving but real economics: the 2024 profit flipped a 2023 loss while the company was under legal scrutiny in France.

What can be applied

Delayed monetization works when the founder owns the balance sheet: Telegram built usage for a decade on self-funding and bonds, then monetized a billion users into $1.4B revenue.

Aftermath

As of May 22, 2025, Telegram had reported its first annual profit of $540M on 2024 revenue of $1.4B and expected 2025 revenue of $2B with profit of $720M. It was preparing a new bond issue of about $1.5B on top of roughly $2.4B already issued over the previous four years. Chief investment officer John Hyman said the company had met its financial targets, and Durov had not ruled out an IPO when market conditions improved, with his French legal case still pending.
