What the business is
Timberhub is a Dutch B2B marketplace connecting manufacturers and construction companies with sawmills for timber materials
Starting capital
€5.8M seed co-led by HV Capital and Creandum, joined by existing investor Speedinvest and the founders of logistics startup Sennder
How it started
Founded in March 2022 in Amsterdam by Ion Sergis, Thomas Androutselis, Ioannis Androutselis and Dimitrios Pagkratis, betting that timber demand will double within a decade and that substituting wood for conventional building materials cuts emissions by 69%.
What happened
The seed round was co-led by HV Capital and Creandum with Speedinvest and Sennder's founders joining. CEO Ion Sergis said bringing transparency, higher availability and faster delivery to the timber supply chain would improve the affordability and predictability of construction projects. HV's Felix Klühr framed the round around fixing a 'gigantic industry in deep need of digital solutions'; Creandum's Peter Specht said the managed marketplace 'contributes to the imperative shift towards a more sustainable future for manufacturing and construction'.
What has to be true
Timber trading is offline and opaque; a managed marketplace can standardise price, quality and availability.
Handling payments and transport, not just matchmaking, is what removes friction from a legacy supply chain.
The climate tailwind — wood substitution cutting emissions 69% — gives buyers a reason beyond price.
Backing from Sennder's founders adds logistics credibility to a procurement-and-transport play.
What can be applied
The decarbonisation pitch can live inside a boring managed marketplace: transparency and lead times do the selling, and the emissions savings follow.
Aftermath
As of the September 2022 raise, Timberhub served customers in 15 European countries. No volume or revenue figures were reported.
