How it ended up
On 1 April 2025 Qualcomm announced it had acquired MovianAI for an undisclosed amount; Bui joined Qualcomm as part of the deal. It was Qualcomm's second AI acquisition of 2025 after Edge Impulse, and Vingroup had already sold VinBrain to Nvidia in December 2024.
Background
VinAI is an AI research company founded in Hanoi in 2019 by Hung Bui, a former DeepMind research scientist, with backing from Vingroup. The bet was that a Vietnam-based lab could do world-class AI research — computer vision, natural language processing and generative AI — rather than Vietnam merely consuming models built elsewhere, and that commercial products would fund the research.
The company shipped AI-powered automotive products such as in-cabin monitoring, security and smart-parking systems for carmakers while publishing research, growing to roughly 200 employees across Hanoi, the US and Australia. The deal value was never disclosed.
