What the business is
Designs and assembles electric SUVs and vans in Vietnam for the home market and export.
The bet
That Vietnam could go from building its first car in 2019 to exporting EVs to America — funded by retail enthusiasm for a stock with ~1% free float.
Starting capital
Founder money, not VC: Vuong and Vingroup pledged a further ~$2B injection in Nov 2024 (Bloomberg).
How it started
Launched in 2017 inside Vingroup, the conglomerate of Vietnam's richest man, Pham Nhat Vuong. VinFast built its Hai Phong plant in 21 months and shipped its first cars in 2019, betting Vietnam could leapfrog from no car industry straight to EV exporter.
What happened
2021: North America entry and a $2B North Carolina plant announced (Reuters). 2022-05: HQ shifted to Singapore ahead of a US listing. 2023-05: recall of all 999 SUVs shipped to the US over a dashboard-screen fault (Rest of World). 2023-08-15: merged with SPAC Black Spade, debut +270% to an $85B close; the rally unwound within weeks. FY2023: net loss $2.4B, fewer than 1,000 cars sold in North America (CNBC). 2024-01: Vuong took back the CEO job (Reuters). 2024-05: the $4B North Carolina plant, originally due mid-2024, delayed again; shares down ~65% from peak (Bloomberg). 2024-11: Vuong pledged another ~$2B.
How it ended up
Still producing, but shrinking: in May 2026 VinFast announced a corporate restructuring and moved to spin off its Vietnam factories to shed most of its debt (Reuters, Bloomberg). The US plant remains unbuilt and the overseas footprint is being cut back.
What has to be true
The bet on Vietnam as an EV-export nation was defensible — low costs, an existing factory base, and a founder willing to fund it personally.
The stock's ~1% free float meant the listing measured mania, not orders; leadership treated the $85B as validation instead of noise.
Entering the world's most competitive car market with a recalled product and no brand gave the export bet almost no chance at the volumes it reported.
Capital intensity was underestimated: a $4B US plant on top of $2.4B annual losses required cash only the founder could keep supplying.
What can be applied
A listing is not demand. With ~1% free float, VFS priced hope, not cars — every dollar the market did not provide had to come from one family. Free float is part of what a price measures.
Aftermath
As of May 2026, VinFast is restructuring: Reuters reported the group will undergo corporate reorganization, and Bloomberg reported it seeks to spin off its Vietnam factories to shed most of its debt. The North Carolina plant remains delayed, and Vuong, who returned as CEO in January 2024, has supplied repeated rounds of parent money, including ~$2B pledged in November 2024.
