Wonder Studios' AI-native bet: $12M seed to replace the traditional film studio model

London's Wonder Studios bets AI-native workflows can make premium filmmaking fast and affordable enough to own IP; Atomico-led $12M seed, 1.5M-view series.

What the business is

An AI-native entertainment studio producing music videos, brand content, short films and original series for clients and for itself, backed by a community app connecting AI filmmakers with work.

Starting capitalOver £2M pre-seed announced at launch (April 2025), plus $12M seed led by Atomico (October 2025)

How it started

Xavier Collins, formerly of Deliveroo and Turo and a founding partner at Lumiere Ventures, and Justin Hackney, a BAFTA-winning filmmaker and former Creative Director at ElevenLabs, founded Wonder in London and launched in April 2025 with a pre-seed of more than £2M that included investors from ElevenLabs and Google DeepMind. Their thesis: generative video had collapsed production timelines from months to days, but no one had rebuilt the studio model around it.

What happened

Within six months Wonder produced an AI music video for Lewis Capaldi's 'Something in the Heavens' with Google DeepMind, YouTube and Universal Music Group — which also drew backlash from fans worried about AI replacing human creatives — and released 'Beyond the Loop', its first original anthology, co-produced with ElevenLabs, Freepik, Fal and Kling AI. The series passed 1.5M views and a second season was greenlit. In October 2025 Atomico led a $12M seed alongside LocalGlobe, Blackbird and Adobe Ventures; Wonder said it had generated significant revenue in its first six months and would double its engineering team and push into IP ownership.

No ending yet — it is still running.

Background

Wonder Studios is a London-based AI-native entertainment studio founded by Xavier Collins (ex-Deliveroo and Turo, founding partner of Lumiere Ventures) and Justin Hackney (a BAFTA-winning filmmaker and former Creative Director at ElevenLabs). It launched in April 2025 with a pre-seed of more than £2M on the bet that generative video had collapsed production timelines from months to days — so a studio built entirely around AI workflows could make premium stories faster and cheaper than the traditional multi-year, high-cost model.

The business runs on three pillars: commercial work for brands and artists, IP partnerships with creators, and original content, powered by a curated community of 200+ AI-native filmmakers and an app that connects them with work. Within six months Wonder made an AI music video for Lewis Capaldi's 'Something in the Heavens' with Google DeepMind, YouTube and Universal Music Group — drawing fan backlash over AI's role — and released 'Beyond the Loop', its first original anthology, co-produced with ElevenLabs, Freepik, Fal and Kling AI.

'Beyond the Loop' passed 1.5M views and a second season was greenlit, along with a global competition to discover AI filmmaking talent. In October 2025 Atomico led a $12M seed round alongside existing investors LocalGlobe and Blackbird, with Adobe Ventures, Erik Huggers, the Sidemen's Upside Ventures and ElevenLabs CEO Mati Staniszewski among the backers. Wonder said it had already generated significant revenue and planned to double its engineering team and accelerate ownership of original IP, including a documentary with Emmy-winning Campfire Studios.

The open question is whether an AI-native studio can sustain audience goodwill and commercial demand — the Capaldi video's backlash shows the reputational risk — while the industry's legal fights over AI training data play out.

What has to be true

  • The founders paired proven entertainment taste (Hackney's filmmaking and ElevenLabs background) with platform-building experience (Collins at Deliveroo and Turo).
  • Generative video had already collapsed the cost and time of production, so a studio built around it could undercut traditional economics from day one.
  • The community of 200+ AI filmmakers gave Wonder a talent pipeline and distribution channel that incumbents lack.
  • Commissioned commercial work (music videos, brand content) generated revenue and credibility before the studio bet on original IP.
  • Backing from Atomico, LocalGlobe, Blackbird and Adobe Ventures validated that investors saw a new studio model, not just a tool company.

What can be applied

When a technology collapses production cost, the winners are studios rebuilt around the new workflow — owning IP and a talent pipeline — not incumbents bolting AI onto legacy production.

Aftermath

As of 2025-10-23, Wonder Studios is live and scaling: 'Beyond the Loop' surpassed 1.5M views with Season 2 greenlit, commercial work included the Capaldi music video, and the $12M Atomico-led seed was earmarked to double engineering and accelerate IP ownership, including a planned documentary with Campfire Studios. No shutdown, acquisition or later funding event had been reported at that date.
