Zed bets the AI-era editor must be rebuilt from scratch; 1.0 lands, Sequoia-backed

Zed is a high-performance, open-source, multiplayer code editor written in Rust, with a GPU-accelerated UI (GPUI) and AI agents built into the foundation.

That winning editors must be rebuilt from scratch — native, GPU-rendered, multiplayer and AI-native — not forked from VS Code; collaboration is conversation, not commits.

$10M round in 2023 (with a16z participation), then a $32M Series B led by Sequoia Capital announced 2025-08-20, bringing total funding to over $42M.

Nathan Sobo built Atom at GitHub; by the late 2010s the team saw Atom's Electron/web foundation as a ceiling it could not optimize past. Sobo published 'We Have to Start Over' and founded Zed Industries in 2021 with ex-Atom engineers Max Brunsfeld (Tree-sitter) and Antonio Scandurra (Teletype CRDTs) to rebuild from zero.

Zed entered private alpha in June 2022 — the same month GitHub announced Atom's sunset — and open-sourced on 2024-01-24, quickly passing 30,000 GitHub stars. A $10M round came in 2023, then a $32M Series B led by Sequoia on 2025-08-20 (150,000+ active developers, 1,100 contributors). Windows went stable on 2025-10-15, and 1.0 shipped on 2026-04-29 with parallel AI agents, Zed for Business, and Agent Client Protocol support for Claude Agent, Codex, OpenCode and Cursor; its Product Hunt launch on 2026-05-01 took #2 of the day.

Still scaling: 1.0 is framed as a stability milestone, not a finish; weekly releases continue, DeltaDB (a CRDT synchronization engine) is in development, and Zed for Business launched alongside 1.0.

Zed bet on owning the foundation: a from-scratch Rust/GPU stack meant performance and AI were native, not features bolted onto a VS Code fork.

It treated collaboration as the differentiator — CRDT-based real-time editing and character-level permalinks instead of commits, a decade before most editors caught up.

Open-sourcing the whole stack in 2024 (including the collaboration server) bought developer trust and distribution, taking the repo past 30k stars almost immediately.

Timing the 1.0 milestone when the AI-editor category exploded turned five years of patience into a launch moment — #2 on Product Hunt behind the day's agentic darling.

Zed ignored the VS Code-fork trend and rebuilt from scratch, so when AI-native became the category it already owned the foundation — architecture was the strategy, and 1.0 was the payoff.

As of 7 May 2026, Zed is live and scaling: 1.0 shipped on 2026-04-29 with macOS, Linux and Windows at parity, parallel agents, Zed for Business, and ACP integrations with Claude Agent, Codex, OpenCode and Cursor. The company reports hundreds of thousands of daily developers, the GitHub repo sits around 86,000 stars, weekly releases continue, and DeltaDB (CRDT-based sync) is the stated next milestone. Funding stands at over $42M after the August 2025 Sequoia-led Series B; figures come from Zed's own posts, the Business Wire release (via ITWeb), AI Wiki and Product Hunt leaderboard snapshots.
