How it started
Nathan Sobo built Atom at GitHub; by the late 2010s the team saw Atom's Electron/web foundation as a ceiling it could not optimize past. Sobo published 'We Have to Start Over' and founded Zed Industries in 2021 with ex-Atom engineers Max Brunsfeld (Tree-sitter) and Antonio Scandurra (Teletype CRDTs) to rebuild from zero.

Background
