What the business is
Modern banking tech company; its Fusion Suite let fintechs embed financial products — wallets, neobanking, payroll, gifting, lending and more — on partner-bank rails.
The bet
Fusion bet that fintechs would embed wallets, neobanking, payroll and lending on Zeta's stack via partner banks — a business the regulator could switch off, and did.
How it started
Zeta's Fusion Suite ran card and banking programs for fintechs on RBL Bank and IDFC Bank, enabling embedded wallets, neobanking, payroll, gifting, lending, disbursements, refunds, rebates and expense management.
What happened
During H2 2022 Junio migrated to M2P (infra) and Transcorp (banking). Zeta told partners at end-2022 that all Fusion programs under RBL were closing; the IDFC program was also being scrapped. PostPe and KreditBee were Fusion's biggest players, and Slice — hit by the same rule — reportedly saw its business drop 85%.
How it ended up
All Fusion programs under RBL were closed; the IDFC program was winding down. Zeta confirmed regulatory and market-driven changes to specific product lines while declining specifics on client confidentiality.
What has to be true
A whole product line wound down at once — every RBL program plus IDFC — not routine client churn.
The cause is crisp: RBI's prepaid-lending crackdown, which visibly crushed comparable card businesses (Slice down 85%).
Downstream effects were concrete: FamPay, which claims 10 million active customers, faced card reissuance and re-KYC.
Zeta's own statement corroborates a regulatory-driven retreat while the sources supply the specifics.
What can be applied
Embedded finance built on one regulatory permission is a policy bet, not a product moat: when the rule changes, the infrastructure vendor wears the write-off along with its clients.
Aftermath
As of 2023-02-14: RBL programs were closed at end-2022; the IDFC wind-down was under way and expected to cut off FamPay's banking services in coming months; FamPay said migration would not disrupt service even as its app had already stopped new-user onboarding; Junio had left for M2P and Transcorp in 2022.
