UK digital bank offering savings, loans, credit cards and embedded finance, built on its own in-house banking platform.

That a P2P lending pioneer could reinvent itself as a full-stack, profitable digital bank — building its own technology rather than renting fintech APIs.

$300M SoftBank-led round at a $1B valuation (2021); €82M (~$87M) upround led by A.P. Moller Holding at well over $1B (2024).

Zopa was founded in 2005 as a pioneer of peer-to-peer lending, matching investors with borrowers at better rates than banks offered — years before Prosper and LendingClub made the category a movement. For fifteen years the model worked, until regulation tightened, returns thinned, and Covid froze consumer lending markets in 2020.

Zopa picked up a UK banking licence in 2020 and pivoted to savings and non-P2P loans, shutting the original P2P book completely by the end of 2021. A $300M SoftBank-led round that year valued it at $1B with IPO talk for 2022 that never materialized. Instead the bank reached its first full year of profit in April 2024, and in December 2024 raised €82M from A.P. Moller Holding rather than listing, with revenue north of £300M and profit doubling to £32M.

It abandoned its dying P2P business early and completely, rather than defending the model that made its name.

The banking licence came before the crisis peaked, letting it operate as a regulated bank while P2P rivals wound up.

Owning its core stack made it profitable at a time when API-assembled neobanks were still burning, and opened a second business supplying its platform to brands like John Lewis.

It waited out the frozen IPO market with profit in hand instead of chasing a listing for the story.

A founding idea can expire without taking the company with it. Zopa treated P2P as a stage, not an identity: it licensed early, kept its own stack, and let the deposit bank fund the sequel.

As of 2026-09-11 Zopa is private, profitable and expanding beyond retail banking. In May 2026 the FCA approved it to deliver targeted support on investment products, opening a wealth line; in August 2026 it partnered with smart-home firm Hive to finance solar and heat-pump installations at checkout — three-minute quotes, loans up to £50,000 — and used the deal to launch 'Zopa for Business', an embedded-finance platform bundling payments, retail and auto finance. An IPO remains the stated ambition once UK listing conditions improve.
