做的是什么生意

AppSumo is a deals marketplace where software companies offer lifetime or discounted plans and entrepreneurs buy them, with AppSumo taking a cut — 'Groupon for software' aimed at small businesses.

启动资金$60 — $48 for a developer-built PayPal checkout page, $12 for a domain

起因

Noah Kagan was employee #30 at Facebook, fired before the IPO after leaking a product announcement to TechCrunch, and had also taken salary over equity at Mint before its $170M sale. In March 2010 he spent a weekend testing a hypothesis — entrepreneurs would buy discounted software deals — paying $48 for a developer-built PayPal page and $12 for a domain, then getting Imgur to offer a discounted Pro deal with free placement on Reddit. AppSumo did about $12,000 in its first 24 hours.

经过

Kagan realized the real product was the email list: by 2012 AppSumo had 700,000+ subscribers, and the flywheel drew better software partners, better deals and more buyers. It passed $100k ARR within a year and kept refusing venture capital as it grew into the best-known marketplace for lifetime deals, adding podcasts, YouTube and courses as acquisition channels.

结果

Still running and still bootstrapped: roughly $80M in revenue in 2023 with about 127 employees and no VC ever taken; after a reported revenue decline in 2024-2025, Kagan returned as CEO in 2025 to refocus the business.

背景

AppSumo is a daily-deals marketplace where software companies offer discounted or lifetime plans and entrepreneurs buy them, with AppSumo earning a cut — 'Groupon for software.' It was founded in March 2010 by Noah Kagan, a former Facebook employee #30 who was fired before the IPO and had also missed the Mint equity windfall, and who wanted to prove a business could be validated before it was built.

The bet was that entrepreneurs would buy discounted software through a trusted email list, and that the marketplace could scale to eight figures without venture capital. Kagan spent $60 — $48 for a developer-built checkout page and $12 for a domain — got Imgur to offer a discounted Pro deal with free placement on Reddit, and made about $12,000 in the first 24 hours. By 2012 the email list passed 700,000 subscribers, and AppSumo crossed $100k ARR within a year.

AppSumo kept refusing VC as it grew into the best-known channel for lifetime deals: roughly $80M in revenue in 2023, about 127 employees, zero outside investors. After a reported revenue decline in 2024-2025, Kagan returned as CEO in 2025 to refocus, and the company remains one of the largest bootstrapped marketplaces on the internet.

这件事要成立,得有什么

  • AppSumo validated demand with a single deal before building anything — first customer in a day, about $12,000 in revenue in 24 hours.
  • The email list, not inventory or platform, was the real product: 700,000+ subscribers by 2012 made a single send worth six figures.
  • Lifetime-deal economics aligned incentives: steep discounts for buyers, mass distribution for software companies, healthy margins for AppSumo.
  • Bootstrapping forced profitability from week one and kept the cap table clean — zero VC, by choice.
  • A marketplace flywheel compounded without ad spend: better deals drew more subscribers, which attracted even better partners.

可借鉴之处

Validate with one real sale before building: a single deal, landing page and community post proved the model in a day — and the email list, not VC, became the moat.

后续进展

As of September 2026 AppSumo still operates as a bootstrapped software-deals marketplace: CNBC reported roughly $80M in revenue in 2023, profiles list about 127 employees and $0 in venture capital, and after an estimated revenue decline in 2024-2025 Kagan returned as CEO in 2025 to refocus the business. It remains the best-known 'lifetime deals' channel for software, with 700,000+ active users and a portfolio of adjacent bootstrapped tools under the Sumo Group umbrella.
